And the cherry on top! Let’s go home and thump some Royals.
May 14, 2026 at 5:04 pm #307437Wow….I was thinking the magic was going away, and then Pozo and all the rest. A winning trip to the west coast. I’ll take it. I would have left McGreevy in for the 7th. Sigh. Still, another good outing from him. 2.10 ERA.
May 14, 2026 at 5:11 pm #307438Two questions:
Why did Ollie pull McGreevy when he did. It appeared that McGreevy was upset with being taken out.
And why did he use two of the 3 worst pitchers we have in an 8 man bullpen in a close game?
Of course he has won 350 major league games more than I have.
He also has lost 341 more than I have>
May 14, 2026 at 5:15 pm #307439You would have allowed McGreevy to begin the 7th? You must be attempting to take on the persona of someone who retains what was once termed a reasonably sound mind…
May 14, 2026 at 5:21 pm #307440I voiced my theory earlier in the thread, NC. I guessed that he may have experienced some sort of bizarre and outlandish flashback to game 1 of the ’22 NLWC which compelled him to exhibit a strange type of top step behavior…These episodes are entirely unexplainable but they do occur…
May 14, 2026 at 5:29 pm #307441The kiddos really bailed out the whiz-kid today. I almost would have liked to hear what he’d have had to say if the Cardinals hadn’t mounted a comeback to hang a W up on the board…It probaly would have been something along the lines of, “Water isn’t really that wet…I’ll tell you that!”
May 14, 2026 at 5:32 pm #307442I think if Pozo played as much as Pages he would far outhit Pete, and his defense would be comparable. He just never gets the reps.
He’s aggressive – won’t walk much. But he can really put the bat on the ball.
May 14, 2026 at 5:38 pm #307443Last season Pozo was a terrible hitter on days he caught BikeMike.
May 14, 2026 at 5:39 pm #307444Taking a gander at Thursday’s out-of-town scoreboard:
The Brewers down the Padres 7-1 at County Stadium.
The Reds squeak by the Nationals 15-1 at Riverfront Stadium.
The Pirates won over the Rockies 7-2 at Forbes Field.
And the Cubs and Braves are about to get started from Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta. The Cubs will be facing Chris Sale in this one.

May 14, 2026 at 5:40 pm #307445At the end of the day the Redbirds are 7 games above sea level so I should keep my mouth shut in regards to the Cardinal manager. My only excuse is that it’s so incredibly amusing to poke fun at the little guy…TLR was a lot of fun to poke fun at too, but in an entirely different context. I used to really like tuning in to the postgame episodes known as, “Tony TV.” My favorite parts were when he would literally have smoke coming out of his ears when a member of the media was asking him a question…Haha!
May 14, 2026 at 6:00 pm #307446I will play devils advocate. If Oli left him in and he got torched, pretty sure there would have been an uprising because he was left in too long. Need a thick skin to play the manager position.
May 14, 2026 at 6:04 pm #307447“Last season Pozo was a terrible hitter on days he caught BikeMike.”
Do you think there is a correlation, or could that have just been coincidence – sample size?
I think he’s just a good hitter and with the reps would hit whether he catches or DH’s. Perhaps the rigors of catching a lot would take some toll on his offense, but I don’t think it would be significant with enough reps.

ParticipantGood comeback win. The A’s bullpen is worse than ours. At least we have a legitimate closer.
May 14, 2026 at 6:33 pm #307449BikeMike – I’m not sure. It could small sample size. I do know that Pozo swings at a lot of terrible pitches so I think if he were more of a regular, that would be exposed. But that said, he also gets some hits off a lot of terrible pitches so you never know.
I do think Pages wound up as the slightly better hitter last season of the two and was the far superior defender. I can see why Pozo gets so much love though. He’s come through in a lot of big situations at the plate and he’s got the rags to riches backstory.
May 14, 2026 at 6:49 pm #307450Very fortunate to come out with this series win. Let’s get home a keep it up.
May 14, 2026 at 7:06 pm #307451KCB I understand what you are saying and there is some truth that some fans would have complained. But McGreevy has been by far our most consistent SP and he was only at 74 pitches.
It does seem like the org has dramatically cut down on the pitches they will let guys throw across the whole org. Minors guys are going 60-80 only most of the time. We may not even see most of our guys hit 100 pitches in a game.
May 14, 2026 at 7:12 pm #307452The Cardinals and Dodgers both have a W/L record of 25-18. If you would have told me in March that the two teams would have identical W/L records after more than a quarter of the ’26 season had been placed in the books, I’d have asked you how many dispensaries you’d visited that day.
May 14, 2026 at 7:12 pm #307453Oli said in postgame that there were too many balls hit hard off McGreevy.
One reason I’d have waited to lift him is that I worry that what effective relievers we have will get burned out.
Per Fangraphs, there are 16 NL relievers with at least 20 appearances (max is 21). The Cards have 4 of those 16…O’Brien, Romero, Stanek, and…Bruihl. Soriano and Svanson are at 19. There are 31 in the NL with at least 19 appearances. Now, we’re only 9th in innings pitched by the pen. But we are 3rd in appearances. I recognize that pens come and go, and Romero, Stanek, and Bruihl won’t be back next year.
But still….May 14, 2026 at 7:19 pm #307454I’m curious to know if after he said too many balls were hit hard off of McGreevy if he followed up that statement with the iconic phrase, “I’ll tell you that!”
May 14, 2026 at 7:31 pm #307455McGreevy had given up one hit since the second inning. The day before, Liberatore was getting peppered all game and he left him out there.
May 14, 2026 at 7:42 pm #307456ATM-Just for the record-I would have left him in. But it was Oli’s decision and Stanek JoJo and O ‘Brien were lined up for 7 8 and 9. All have been pitching well except OBriens hiccup in SD. Manager is a tough position.
May 14, 2026 at 7:59 pm #307457Yeah, who knows on Pozo jnevel. I don’t put much stock in discouraging situational stats as an indicator of their future performance in those situations. I think the results are likely random events.
Pozo can flat out hit. He will look bad at times as he is so aggressive. And maybe pitchers would exploit that if he played more. I think he would adjust, but we won’t know unless he gets a shot at semi-regular work.
May 14, 2026 at 8:54 pm #307459Unfortunately the Cubs came away with a 2-0 win tonight against the Braves down at Fulton County Stadium. Sale pitched well but the Braves bats were silent the entire night.
May 14, 2026 at 9:25 pm #307460Sale just keeps cranking out the work along with the nice performances. The tall and lanky lefty’s now put together 321 turns in Big League pitching rotations which is a substantially more than Adam Wainwright had at the same age of 37. Sales’ career ERA is 2.99 in well over 2100 innings of work. I recall drooling at the prospect of the Cardinals adding him to their pitching rotation before he left Chicago for Boston. In any case, he’s a first rate SP’er.
May 14, 2026 at 9:31 pm #307462It will be hard to catch the Cubs if they can’t even lose to the Braves.
