Ive been impressed with soriano. He generally locates well. I think the cardinals have shown themselves good tonight even if we lose.
I didnt get to watch much but not a bad result. Sure you want to win but having a competitive game with a decent team is great.

Agreed, absolutely. The fans will support the club in *almost* any circumstance. For instance, even though the Birds finished dead last in 2023, and the owners retained the failed manager, the fans still bought tickets for 2024. Very nearly 3,000,000 tickets, in fact.
But now the owners are not even trying to win. Not now, not next year, and not the year after that. (Unless they replace Marmol before the end of his contract, of course.) Ownership has betrayed a public trust with their fans, gutting not just player payroll, but player talent also. The team motto should be “Choose to lose!”
Apparently all those online Cardinal fans at VEB (and a handful here) who’ve been demanding a “rebuild” since about 2017, well, those folks won’t actually support the rebuild by going out and buying tickets. And maybe they shouldn’t. I know the DeWitts will never get another dollar from me, full stop.
Those attendance numbers will continue to take a dive in direct proportion with the misfortunes of the team. No one will toss their hard earned money at a inferior product for very long. Not even the so-called, “best fans in baseball.”
I can recall attending many games in the mid to late 70’s with gates that were well below 10k. You could nearly sit on the 3B side of the field and carry on a conversation with your drunk neighbor over on the 1B side. It really wasn’t so bad. You got to see a lot of future HOF’ers on teams like the Pirates, Reds, Dodgers and Phillies. It was fun and you almost felt like you had the entire ballpark all to yourself.

It’s a REBUILD! Get used to it.
While I don’t think the team is trying to win this year either, I don’t think that they are mailing it in for the next three years, either. With a quick turnaround from the farm, they will have ample payroll space to get back into contention in the next couple of years. There’s basically no money being spent on payroll after this year, at this point.
As for the team, I don’t think Leahy should start long term, but that’s already known. The last few bullpen guys are also killing the team, which I think could easily have been remedied in the offseason (either through acquiring a #5 as good as Leahy realistically will be, which is a 4.50ish ERA pitcher or a couple of decent bullpen arms) for relatively cheap, $10-15M. So that I will take them to task for. Besides that, the team is looking a little better than I expected.
Until the TV revenue disparity changes we are at home in the welfare line, permanently.
We are suiting up a 60mil budget, while the Mets roll in w/a 300mil player budget. That is “choosing to lose” and it IS a broken trust, yet all the PR we hear is about back when we were a top 10 budget, and then point to the future like it’s a temporary situation. I call BS.
“Rebuild” is what the FO wants the fans to focus on, gobbling up that worthless PR.
Calling it a “reset” or “rebuild” changes nothing. If fans want to bash Bills poor boy committment to the budget, Bill has earned it, by his choice.
Bob, i have zero problem with the rebuild. My problems are with what management did to get us to this rebuild. A lot of wasted time n promises by ownership as well as mismanagement of the farm. Thats why ownership deserves it.
As far as Leahy’s start – I don’t think 4 ER in 5 IP is good. That’s a 7.2 ERA?
If he gets 10-15 starts under his belt and his ERA is 4.5+ then hopefully they move him back into the bullpen.
Hopefully, Fitts, Dobbins and Mathews will be knocking on the door soon. It is always better to have choices.
The tv revenue disparity does hurt some but it is also just another excuse for the team to throw around. The KC Royals are rolling out a CBT payroll of $185M this year. Is their tv revenue that much better than the Cardinals?
The revenue and spending issue is going to be argued over big time after this season is over. Either a salary cap is going to be implemented or the CBT penalties will be enhanced, one or the other. I am sure Bill DeWitt is rooting for a salary cap but he better watch out for that pesky salary floor.
There will be a push by owners for a cap, but I don’t think it will happen. I do think the luxury tax situation will be more strict.
I would float some sort of deal where teams that end up say in the top 10 record wise get to participate in an extra revenue sharing pool. Similar to how it used to be that players on teams that finished in the first division would share in post season money – maybe that is still the case, I don’t know.
As for the rebuild, I am okay with it. I don’t see that as a broken trust. Sports are not an exact science. You can go out and spend a lot of money and still not see the results you wanted. Or you can be thrifty and things click. I think the rebuild is the right way to go at this juncture. I often felt Mo got a little too aggressive in building teams to compete in the immediate future. You just kind of knew that you were going to pay for that at some point.
