Nice game last night. Even distribution of hits throughout the lineup. Let’s keep that up and give these Brewmen what for.

What is a successful start today? A pitcher who can manage to do five innings, I guess. Whatever happened to long relief? Gone the way of the dodo bird, along with complete games, shutouts, no hitters. Success for our Birds today? A five inning start and a string of one-inning relief stints. Well, if that’s baseball today, let’s keep it up.

    Rah Cardinals!

What is a successful start today?

I looked at the team with the most wins, Braves, and their starter with the most wins, Sale. He goes 6-7 innings. He makes $18M this year and $27M next year. Figure that is the gold standard now days. That being the case, 5+ IP does seem like ‘successful’.

Brandon Carl Sproat. Drafted by Texas in the 7th round in 2019…..but didn’t sign. Drafted in the 3rd round by the Mets in 2022……but didn’t sign. Drafted in the 2nd round by the Mets in 2023……and finally signed. The 25 year old Sproat has an 0-4 lifetime mark with a 5.89 ERA. Came over to Milwaukee this off season in the Freddie Peralta trade with the Metropolitans. We are blessed to be facing this fellow tonight instead of Freddie. Let’s not mark tonight as Sproat’s first ML victory. I’m calling it 6-5 Birds with Herrera getting off the proverbial home run schneid by planting a Sproat heater high up into the left field rafters.

And what’s for din-din one may ask? It’ll be a trip over to Cracker Barrel to indulge in either Grandma’s breakfast or I just may be leaning in the direction of their baked trout, with 3 sides…..most likely their fruit cup, mashed potatoes and 2 pancakes. We’ll wash her all down with some hot coffee and chilled ice water.

    FYI here,
The Doppler Radar shows a huge pile of green stuff on the north side of downtown St. Louis. It appears at this point it will mostly go north, perhaps towards the Chicago area. Might impact the Reds and Cubs again tonight. Hopefully all will be clear by game time tonight at Sportsmans Park.

And as we speak, here in SW Indiana we are getting more rain. That’s all we need at this point after last week’s deluge.

Din-din today will be a Subway Tuna sandwich, some baked beans, an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew, and a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream.

We just polished off a din-din of pork tenderloin, ratatouille and potato pancakes, washed down with a nice bottle of Morgan and finishing with a bowl of fresh strawberries. Yum.

Unless I’m having trouble getting to sleep I’ll have to watch tonight’s game on replay tomorrow morning after the village’s Wednesday market.

Has anybody read a good baseball book lately? I’m in the mood.

I first read it in my early 20’s, but recently took another look at some of the more amusing segments of the book, “The Umpire Strikes Back” by Ron Luiano. That book always provides me with a good laugh or two. Some of the best parts have to do with the extended and heart warming love affair that he shared with Earl Weaver…If you haven’t read it, it’s well worth a look.

Ronald Michael Luciano. Great book suggestion for the esteemed Cardinal in France, TD. Thirteen years after Mr. Luciano wrote this book, he went out into his enclosed garage one morning, sat in the driver’s seat and turned on his engine and then sadly left us at the tender age of 58. RIP…..you were a great ump, Ron!

Yeah, I was really sad when I learned of poor Ron’s fate, Pugs. I was led to understand he’d suffered through some serious bouts of depression duing his lifetime. In any case, he certainly provided me with quite a few smiles and laughs during his time in this world and I happen to believe that both he and Earl are in a special place where they can both argue a call and have a tremendous amount of fun and love for one another while doing so…

I saw plenty of chatter on another thread about the possibility of Wetherholt receiving a NL ROY award. Without question his performance thus far has merited strong consideration for that honor.

And that got me to thinking that it’s been quite some time since I’ve tossed out some baseball trivia for this elite squad of Redbird fans to take a swing at answering so here goes…Who are the only two players in Big League history to have been awarded both the ROY and MVP awards for the same season? Hint…It ain’t Tyler Greene or Brendan Ryan…

As always, if you look it up before submitting your answer, you run an extreme risk of having an evil baseball gypsy drop a spider smack dab into the mustard and onions on your $20 ballpark hot dog…Oh, the horror!

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers (Tuesday, May 5) has been postponed due to inclement weather.

The two teams will make up the game on Tuesday, July 7 as the first game of a split doubleheader at 1:15 PM CT. Fans holding tickets to today’s game should use those same tickets for admittance to the 1:15 PM game on July 7.

It looks like the wet stuff is going to go south of Chicago.

At least I will get to watch the Reds and Cubs tonight. Cubs have won something like 11 in a row at Wrigley. Hopefully that streak ends tonight.

Then later tonight it will be the Padres and Giants from Candlestick Park. Me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch for that one.

No baseball in Denver either as is it snowing! We are making up for the winter we never had, at least to some degree. I was scheduled to work tonight’s game, which is rescheduled for Thursday.

So with that said on to din-din; chicken mole burritos, sliced tomatoes, corn, and Spanish rice. I dug out the last cold, frosty one from the garage fridge to finish things off. I bought a 12 pack of Breckenridge Brewery Avalanche amber ale some six weeks ago, so if my math is accurate I have a couple of cold, frosty ones a week.

I am currently reading a book called “Baseball In The Roaring Twenties” by Thomas Wolf. Subtitle is “The Yankees, the Cardinals and the Captivating 1926 Season.” I bought it last year but waited until we were in the 2026 season to start reading it. I am in my own way dedicating this year to the centennial of our first modern era champions.

A light night for din-din entries. With a hardy tip of the cap in Rat’s and Cardinal in France’s direction, today’s Din-Din of The Day honors go to the esteemed BicycleMike for his scrumptious chicken mole burrito, sliced tomato, corn and Spanish rice submission. You plated a dandy, BicycleMike! You know, a valid case for Cardinal in France winning this coveted honor could almost be made on a daily basis. It is for this reason that our culinary judges are extra hard on grading his din-din delights. Let’s complete our sweep tomorrow and then it’s on to the west coast to rough up the Pads and A’s.

It’s soggy and chilly in StL. tonight, so I’m having a bowl of black eyed peas with diced onions, seasoned up real good with salt and pepper, Tobasco and a splash of La Preferida vinegar and pepper sauce along with a couple of Jimmy Ray Dean breakfast sausage links and some fresh out of the oven Jiffy cornbread muffins topped with strawberry jelly and a glass of iced tea to drink. I’ll be breaking a sweat from all that Tobasco as I watch Ohtani take a turn and work the mound during the Dodgers/Astros game on TBS.

Thanks for the prestigious din-din-of-the-day award! But as you said, CIF could take home the prize on a daily basis.

Still snowing here. We have knocked off the snow from tree branches a couple of times, and hopefully the overnight snow is not too damaging.

On 1TDs excellent question of two guys winning the MVP and ROY in the same year, seems like one guy was Fred Lynn in ‘75.

Will have to think about it some more.

Didn’t Ichiro do it? I remember a lot of consternation because his playing time overseas didn’t count.

Good call on Ichiro. That might be the ther guy as I am pretty sure Lynn did it.

Was also thinking of Tony Oliva in ‘64, but he won the batting title and ROY as Mick took home the MVP.

That’s right, Bikemike and BW, Freddie Lynn, at the age of 23 was voted both the AL ROY and MVP awards in ’75. And twenty six years later, Ichiro Suzuki, at the age of ’27 was voted both the AL ROY and MVP awards in ’01. Ichi amassed 242 hits and crossed HP 127 times during his “rookie” season…Haha! Big League Pitchers never got him out for about 10 or 11 seasons…Oh, I forgot to mention that he also won a GG in CF during his rookie year. The first of 10 GG’s. In a row…

Cool 1TD – great question. And I need to clarify, it was Brooks Robinson who won
the ‘64 AL MVP, not Mick.

I read an article years ago I believe from Bill James, where he said from something like 1956 through 1964, Mantle was the “real” AL MVP every year except ‘59 and ‘63. I had Mick in my mind as the ‘64 MVP, which James said he actually was but Brooksie got the hardware.
