The bullpen is what is it and has been the whole season. Some of the guys were great early but have struggled as the season has gone on. The team has brought some new players in with some success but with a lot of failure. Some of the newer players from the minors that are starters will eventually become relievers, hopefully good ones. Trusting in the process is the best strategy long term. Getting riled up over something thats been an issue all season isnt really worth it.
If there is one team in MLB who really does have a winning culture it is Milwaukee. They lose star players each year, lose their star manager to the rival Cubs, and lose their star PBO to the Mets but they just keep winning with a bunch of scrappy no name guys.Their culture is one the Cardinals should try to emulate.
I loved the Brewers recent three game sweep of the Cubs. Each game was excruciating for the north siders as they are now scrapping for a wild card spot.
A winning culture is nice but if it produces no championships then its really for nothing. The braves were once like that but they only won one.
Culture isn’t everything but it is something. Consider the Brewers and Rays, compare them to the couple-years-ago Mets, maybe the current Yankees, Dodgers. The Brewers & Rays have that “We don’t care what they say, we’re gonna win because we always do” attitude. Yet there’s something off with the best teams money can buy. Yeah injuries, but their 2nd teamers are generally guys with solid big league reputations, talent on par with the Rays… For them, “it’s ok we’ll be fine when we need to be.” They probably will, but as a coach myself, I’d probably be talking that same talk, but not feeling great about it.
As for the Sept 9 bullpen decisions, I agree with the post above but also get that Ollie was consistent with the overall season goal by putting guys in positions to see what he’s got for the future (or not)… for evaluation. It sucks in real-time, but it is consistent. I just hope our up and coming stars don’t lose the faith.

I wouldn’t say it is for nothing. 29 teams end their season disappointed but that doesn’t mean all 29 were a failure.
Filling up your stadium most nights is good for businesss. Going to the playoffs each year is something us Cardinal fans took for granted but not anymore. We have won one playoff series in the last decade. I would like to win another playoff series someday.

I think “winning culture” is an effect, not a cause. In other words talent creates a winning culture. But a “winning culture” without talent will have trouble being successful.
Our 2023 team is an example. We were mostly consistent winners for more than a decade, but then things went south with veterans getting older and younger guys not producing as hoped.
Good pitching will give you a greater chance year in and year out than a “winning culture.”
Well bling you must have been happy a few years ago whrn we were competing, grabbing low hanging fruit and hoping for a wild card birth. Fine for some, but not for me. I believe you play to win it all or none. No half measures.
Why do you say that willie? I don’t think there was a winning culture throughout the org then. They were just scraping by doing the minimum. Eventually it slid to less than the minimum which isn’t surprising.
In a very real sense my experience has been that it’s infinitely more painful to achieve a WS appearance and walk away without achieving the ultimate goal of a WS championship than it is to not even qualify for a post-season berth. It’s not even close…I’ve experienced 3 WS game 7 losses in my lifetime as a Redbird fan and was actually present at Busch Memorial Stadium and situated in the LCF bleachers less than 50 ft. from where Flood lost his footing on that fateful Oct. afternoon in ’68. As a young boy, it was a valuable lesson regarding heartbreak that prepared me for later on in life when my HS sweetheart left me for that swarthy Corsican they called, “Frenchy”…Haha!
Well bling they were going to playoffs every year almost with no realistic of winning it all. So by your definition they had a winning culture. Enough fans finally figured out what i already knew, that that wasnt a winning culture. It was a culture of just getting by enough to fill the seats.

By using the totally vague term “a chance”, this statement is meaningless. One could argue that every team has a chance, starting the season tied for first. What chance is meaningful and what chance is not can be defined in any way anyone wants and it could change many times over six months.
There there is the question of a chance at what? The last Wild Card or winning the World Series?
