18 games to go. We need to win every one of them to get to the old 90-win goal! We probably have to win 13 or 14 to have any reasonable shot at the post season which feels a little less unlikely than it did on opening day. That’s 2 sweeps and 4 other series where we take 2 of 3. Pretty tough for sure. Not impossible , but close to it given our recent performance. We do own the tie-breaker over the Padres should it come to that but not vs the Diamondbacks. The good news is that aside from the Brewers and White Sox, our opponents aren’t any better than us. The White Sox may not be either given the division they play in. And the Brewers may be playing for nothing those last 3 games so a chance they give us weak pitchers or at least short starts to line their rotation up.
A run would be fun. But what we have seen is games where we look great, and games where we don’t look great. Exactly as expected of a young team. I expect that to continue. But you never know. We have seen games where we stunk but our opponent stunk worse.
Alright, I will be in attendance at these next two. Two organizations that have played each other for some what, 140 years or more?
Anybody recall the big Hornsby for Frisch trade? Me either, but I have read about it. How about dealing Johnny Mize to the Giants? Lousy – Stan voiced his displeasure at that deal. Sadecki for Cepeda? Ah, now some of us do remember that one.
The Giants sent me a great email about all the things to do around the park area. Should be a fun time. The Lovely Lady Bike flies back with the granddaughters today so I will be on my own.
The mathematical chance for a post season berth is there, but realistically it ain’t gonna happen. Even if we win 90, you need some other clubs that have played better than us to stumble. But still, the games will be played so we will see.
Looks like Herrera heated up in Denver, but Walker cooled down.
Have fun Mike. I still haven’t got out there to take in a game at the ‘new’ stadium. I still remember the first time I ever saw a defensive shift put on was at Candlestick when I was there as a kid. Somebody put it on vs McCovey and I thought it was cheating.
How did we do so far?
I don’t forsee any serious playoff run by our team with three weeks to go. We can’t seem to sustain enough momentum. We look like an 80 or 81 win club which is fine for a rebuilding year. I would feel better about our chances if all of our remaining games were on the road. We just don’t play well at Busch.
Have taken in a Giants game in Frisco only once. Summer of ’79 while on vacation as a kid. A buddy and I went to the movies in downtown S.F. to see the Clint Eastwood movie “Escape From Alcatraz”. Kind of odd afterwards looking out into the bay and seeing the real Alcatraz Island. Then that evening heading over to Candlestick to see the Giants vs Philadelphia. I recall it being absolutely frigid at the game, and I’m not one to feel cold easily.
Looking at our current cast of recent call-ups, I cannot envision Bernal or Gassy ever playing on a minor league field again. Way too early to tell about Winny or Hjerpe, but boy do they look great. Joshua Baez is looking more and more like the real deal, but am not ready yet to claim his abstinence from minor league play. I anxiously await our other Baez to emerge onto the scene.
And I also can’t wait to get our ER’s(Esteemed Rat’s) meteorological report for the greater San Francisco area for tonight’s game so that I can plan my day and night. I know the weather in southern California has been very dicey of late, but unsure if northern California is getting hit as well? As soon as Rat fills us in, I’ll make din-din reservations and hopefully make plans of watching the ballgame on the tele if Rat gives us the green light.
Taking a gander at the often hard to forecast meteorological conditions for Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
All looks pretty good for this series according to the NWS (National Weather Service). Highs in the 70s during the day and around 60 at night. No precipitation anticipated. However, I might need to verify this with Cecil. Cecil being Granny Clampett’s weather beetle that was almost 100% correct.
And remember, the Giants are in the final days of Mike Krukow’s broadcasting career as he is retiring at the end of the 2026 campaign.

Think we will be fine with weather as it has been gorgeous out here over the weekend and today. But we will see what Rats has in store.
McCovey was something else. I met him at an autograph signing in Denver some years ago, and has hand swallowed mine when we shook hands. Really nice guy with really big hands.
I recall reading something Ernie Banks said about moving from shortstop to first base. He said the first time Willie McCovey came up it seemed like he was only 10 feet away. Banks was genuinely intimidated playing first with McCovey at the dish. 😄
Brewers beat the Cubs today 4-3 in Milwaukee to increase their lead to 8 games in the NLC. It is always a good day when the north siders lose.
The Crew with an 8 game lead and 17 to play. Hard to see them not winning the NLC. And even harder to believe we won when trailing by 6 1/2 with 12 to go in ‘64. But it happened.
Am at the park walking around the area. Man, a gorgeous setting around this ballpark. Took a leisurely stroll by the bay and area. Glanced in a gate and saw our guys loosening up.

CF N. Church LIn regards to the standings on Labor Day, the AL looks to be entirely up for grabs in all three divisions. The NL divisions, with the exception of the NLE, looks to be pretty much decided barring a historical sort of Sept. disaster. With the current WC setup, only a card carrying baseball gypsy would venture a guess at how the WC scenario will play out in either league. The earlier mention of the ’64 Cardinals made me think of the more recent ’11 season in which the Redbirds trailed the Braves for the final NLWC by 8.5 games on Sept. 1st of that season. They’re 4.5 off the pace for that same final NLWC berth as I key this in so, “Youneverknow.”

Well i was wrong about the cardinals far as won games go. I expected low 70s total, maybe less if a lot of injuries. They have exceeded that. But as far as general talent goes, i was about right. I feel the team won more games that they prob should have lost vs losing more games than they should have won. Yea we blew a lot but i knew we had a suspect relief core so thats not a surprise. I dont see us passing arizona which is the 3rd wild card right now. Could happen but i dont see it. Personally i would rather they dont, still lots of work to do with this team before they are ready for prime time.
I never thought they’d be anywhere near .500 by Labor Day, Willie. The reality is my guess was that they’d be buried by late July. And I mean buried deep.
The thing I never expected was two homegrown 100 RBI guys in the middle of the lineup. That tilts the landscape.
Man, Walker really looks bad. Seems to be flailing away without an idea of what is coming.
Webb is sharp though.
The crowd looked to be sparse, but has filled in some. Not a big crowd, but early on I wondered if even 10-12K would be here.

Walker simply cannot lay off that low outside pitch.
Somebody ought to invent a device similar to the anti-bark dog collar – when he swings at that pitch it shoots him a little electric shock.
No, I didn’t see that coming either, Bling. Those two seem to be a couple of nice teeth in the middle of the order to piece together a productive lineup around. And Walker’s really impressed me with the mitt he’s been bringing to RF this season.
