Bernal has hit the ground hitting, unlike the case with Crooks. Time will tell how that holds up as pitchers adapt. Time will also tell how other aspects of his game play at the ML level, but so far, so good. At the same time, Herrera remains an important element offensively, managing an up in the order role despite the recent slump, which seems to be over. So, that means there will be a difficult decision for next year.
I will illuminate the issue just because it can be easily forgotten about:
If we only carry two catchers, and one starts the game in the lineup as the DH, then, if the catcher comes out of the game due to any reason, and the DHing catcher switches from DH to catcher, then we play the rest of the game without a DH and our pitcher has to bat in the lineup. Besides the near automatic out, there is the risk of injury. So, having the second catcher DHing is why a third catcher needs to be occupying one of the bench slots.
Obviously, we could go into next season carrying the third catcher like this year. Whether to do that, or do something else, is the difficult decision mentioned above.
Eddings will be umpiring at 3rdbase tonight.

This one doesn’t look too good on paper to me.
Another option would be to stop referring to Herrera as a catcher and just treat him as the DH/1B he really is. Actually I don’t know if he has ever had much time at 1B but he should. He could spell Burly occassionally when facing tough lefties and then DH the rest of the time.
If I were Ollie I would instruct all the players to wear their caps slightly askew throughout the game tonight just to see the reaction, if any, that draws from officialdom. At the very least it would piss off Eddings royally.
On the din-din front, I’m afraid I have bad news. Abandoning all French-hood this evening we went with cheeseburgers and potato chips followed by vanilla ice cream and raspberries.
Finally, let’s not let these cellar-dwelling Denverites get away with any excessive offense. Let them have the occasional single but no more.

As you imply, they could choose to abandon the present use of the DH role. They could move to a dedicated DH abandoning its use as a way to cycle bench players in and giving defenders a break from playing the field without sitting their bat. As a part of that, they could also choose to sit Burleson’s bat and glove more than they do now.
I don’t know what they will decide to do, but finding out is one of the things I look forward to.
Herrera already DH’s around 5 days a week and catches 2 days a week so it wouldn’t be any different than that except his non-DH days would be at 1B instead of behind the plate.
I’d have to say that the best way to contend with the clownish behavior coming from last night’s HPU is to let it be. It’s never any good to get in a dwizzling match with these sorts of showboat sports officials simply because it has the potential to create an ongoing mutual grudge that could carry over ad infinitum and place the best interests of the team at risk. The Cardinals won the game, so let the nitwit embarrass himself. It’s my best guess that if he continues to exhibit erratic behavior on the field the league will see to it that he’s either reigned in or placed into the soup line. It’s always fun to watch Weaver and Haller trade hugs, but eventually that sort of interaction will place you at a disadvantage.

CIF, that is one of the best posts I have seen on this boaard in a long time. I wholehartedly agree on the hat idea and I applaud you for being rebellious in your current locale and going with the burgers.
I can somehow easily imagine that ground up cow meat would horrify the French. I suggest that the fresh raspberries over vanilla ice cream might have placated them sufficiently to ward off the pitchfork wielding horde.
For my own purposes, I am thinking about what they do to start off next season. What decision they might make about that. It is most likely Herrera will be the same hitter then as he is now. I think it comes down to what are the alternatives to doing what they have been doing. gscottar has pointed out it would be a small change to keep Herrera’s offensive role as is but have him play 1B sometimes instead of catcher sometimes. In that case, there would be two catchers on the roster not named Herrera, exactly like now. They would cover all of the catching. Burleson would sit more. I agree that moving to a dedicated DH and using a bench slot for a dedicated DH is a possibility. That is a decision they might make. I am not convinced they will, though. I am just not sure what alternatives there might be. I hope they don’t continue to have Herrera catch.
