If May is traded then Matthews moves in. If Dobbins is also being considered then yeah although if Romero is also traded Liberatore to the pen fills the lefty vacancy that would leave.
I think he might just be pitching for his rotation spot today.
I think for the rest of this season anyway, the answer is yes. Matthews replaces May and Dobbins replaces Liberatore if Liberatore doesn’t execute today.
I really think Liberatore is about as good as he’s going to get.
He’s pitched a ton at the ML level.
Just add him to the very long list of #4 and #5 starters / long relievers that the Cardinals seem to be so good at developing.
I doubt they will make a rotation decision on a one game performance. If they are of a mind to do so, then they should look at Quinn Mathews’ 1.800 WHIP. That level of traffic would be a disaster. More likely the decisions are already made, and who does what just depends on who gets traded.
There are 51 games left in the season including today.
If the Cardinals play .400 baseball the rest of the way that will end up being a 74 or 75 win season.
I had thought 78-83 back in April.
It’s not the total wins that bother me in 2026 – it’s the fade after a strong start that leads me to not feel good about future seasons.
Instead of growing into the season and improving as it went along its been just the opposite.
Circumstances are extremely ripe for Libby tossing a real decent game today. But one nice effort is doing nothing to change my opinion of him. He’s been a major disappointment. But on this sunny Sunday afternoon in Toronto in the midst of the dog-days of summer, he’ll pitch a nice ballgame. I’m loading up on the Cardinals with my bookie today, so when I load up, that should be everyone’s cue to break open their piggy banks and plop down some coinage on our Birds…….after all, over the years, when have I ever lead you astray on these sort of things?
Din-din today will be yet another trip on up to the beautiful Wisconsin Dells to dine at the Del-Bar.
Herrera is catching today so I’ll say Liberatore has a good start and either gets a quality start or is within an out or two innings wise to get one.

The only way we can win today is if we score more runs than they do. And I am not certain we will be able to do that.
Nonetheless, I will still serve CiFs famous salmon patties with creamed peas and a salad for din-din, and fruit for dessert.
Rolling after 5. Retired the last 11 in a row. Its going to be awkward taking him out of the rotation.
The catcher has some impact, but I’m still pretty certain it is 90-95% about the pitcher’s performance and execution on that day. Herrera does have a good catcher’s ERA this season but that hasn’t always been the case. I do think he’s improved his pitch calling, but the pitcher still has to execute. No catcher ever calls for a hanging slider over the middle of the plate yet Liberatore has thrown quite a few of those this season!

Agree with jnevel re Libby. Makes it harder for me to say who I want to be the 5 starters down the stretch, assuming May is traded. I’d like both Dobbins and Mathews to pitch, but there’s only room for one.
Good to get that win in the last game before the trade deadline. I wonder if they settle at all after the deadline.

I would say both Q and Dobbie should stay up. Plus we will need arms if and when Romero and Stanek are dealt. Maybe throw one into a swing man role the rest of the season.
Glad we didn’t get swept. Last 2 months should be interesting after the deadline.
Liberatore has always been able to turn in a good outing. The problem is you can’t count on even an OK outing. He could become more consistent, but is it likely at this point? Assuming they trade May and Mathews takes his spot, it comes down to do we want to shelve Liberatore to get a look at Dobbins.
Just finished din-din at the Del-Bar and in celebration of our victory today, am getting ready to embark on the 15 minute drive due south to the Dells area casin , where I’ll be plopping down 25 clams a spin on Huff & Even More Puff. Wish me luck, as one needs tons of it to come away a winner in that game.
I’m anxiously awaiting some St. Louis trades. I know it’s not likely, but I have a gut feeling that Bernal is getting traded……hope I’m wrong.
Good to see Libby strong today. But as we have talked about, consistency is not his strong suit. He gives you one of these great efforts but then throws three mediocre-to-poor games. Gotta find that consistent good rhythm.
Mathews looked pretty good yesterday. Kind of has a bit of that herkyness in his delivery that can make hitters get a little off stride. A bit of a latter day Curt Simmons to his style, although not as herky-jerky as Simmons was. Seems like a great kid too. Enjoyed the interviews with his family and himself talking about what got him here. Lots of humility and thankfulness to all who were part of his journey.
Around the league over in the AL the Astros completed a 3 game series broom job over the Rangers to move into a 2.5 lead atop the ALW and the Red Sox hold a 6-3 6th inning lead over the Dodgers as they try to complete a 3 game weekend series sweep at Dodger Stadium. The Red Sox are now a scorching 27-5 since June 25th. And the Phillies who’ve effectively stumbled out of contention in the NLE finally accomplish consecutive W’s as they place a rain shortened 6 inning 8-0 final into the books over the O’s in Baltimore. I expect the month of August to provide a preview to what I’m guessing will be a genuine baseball free for all during the September stretch run to the finish line.
