63 WRC+I love that Quinn is back out there for the 5th. I thought they may pull him early due to 85 pitches thrown through the first 4.
And he finishes off the 5th strong. Not a bad debut. Too many walks but 5 innings, 2 runs isn’t bad. If Winn makes that play in the third or Church holds onto the ball in the fourth (both would have been good plays, really good for the Church play), then Quinn only gives up 1 or maybe zero runs.
It was an acceptable first big league start. Quinn’s pitches look good he just needs to fine tune some things and be a little more aggressive with 2 strikes. That and calming down as he missed some fastballs he was trying to do a little too much on.
The changeup is a really good pitch though and Quinn’s fastball looks great to me as well.
Only 5 innings to go by, but he looked better than the other LH’ed rotation option. And then Gastritis makes an appearance and gets through an inning without allowing an ER so, things are looking up.
10 hits but hard to score many without slugging. The one we got came on our 2 doubles. Otherwise 8 harmless singles and a couple walks. We either need to string all those singles together at once or find a way to hit more doubles and homers. Those homers have been few lately.
Who will be in our bullpen next season? It’s possible that none of the guys there now will be part of those 8 next season. Gastellum maybe most likely. Graceffo possible. O’Brien if still here.

I didn’t see the game but I assume our hitters were once again swinging like maniacs, trying to slug it out there instead of just trying to make contact when the situations called for it.
This team is a lot like 2025. Breezes through the Spring and early Summer looking like a playoff team then wilting on the vine as the Summer heat progresses only to limp along to the finish line with barely a whimper.
It was a fun first half but it looks like we might have a chance at a fairly good slot in the 2027 draft, assuming Manfred and his maniacs allow us to have one.
Well, since the loss on June 11 to end that 6 game winning streak the team is 17-29 and have fallen to 3 games below .500
That is 6 weeks of mostly bad baseball.
I guess they aren’t too far off the pace of the 78 to 83 wins many predicted at the beginning of the season but the way they’ve gotten there casts plenty of doubt on the future.
They have not ‘grown’ into the season they have regressed and pretty badly.
So I guess a lot of this falls on two main things: A putrid offense and a putrid bullpen.
Bullpens can be built / rebuilt in a single offseason but I’m not too sure what to think about the lineup. There’s not a lot to hang your hat on there as far as thinking the offense is going to click with what they have on the roster and at AAA.

If any team needs there to be a 2027 season it’s the Cardinals. All their young players desparately need to play and not sit for a year.
Not sure if this was answered but what happens if we do have a lockout with the 40 man? You usually have to add players to protect and drop others. Don’t recall what happened in 2022.

The roster moves you are talking about happen in mid-November. The CBA doesn’t expire until 11:59 pm on December 1. A lockout wouldn’t occur until then.
If I remember correctly, teams still had to lock players into the 40 man because the deadline for that (mid November) was before teams got locked out. Since the Rule 5 draft takes place after Dec. 1, (and the lockout was already in place) no draft actually happened. Because of the shortened timeline after an agreement was reached and the season would start, owners agreed that no Rule 5 would take place that season.
Was on a plane flying back from Chicago so missed this one. But it looks like part of the difference is our hits were more timely Raley on, and not so much now. Plus home runs are not quite as prevalent.
But hey, we were expecting to be under .500. There was even talk of a 100 loss possibility. So far we have done alright. But still after the nice first half it’s tough to see things go south. As I said after the home run derby – that might be the highlight of the year for Cardinal fans. At least we won something. 😁
