That’s not good enough. Liberatore is clearly the weak link in this rotation. I don’t have a say, but if I did, he would not be in this rotation long. We have Dobbins, and Mathews waiting in the wings.
Agreed Marilyn. While everyone thought it would be Leahy moving back to the pen (including me), Liberatore sure looks like the weak link. The fact that we need left handed relief and that we have Dobbins and Matthews makes it a real possibility after the trade deadline. I’m not saying I think that will happen, but it’s a possibility.
Liberatore lasts 2 2/3, leaving after a single and then a second walk to PCA. Didn’t want him facing Bregman again with 2 on.
Correction. Suzuki was next, then Bregman. Either way, Libby terrible tonight vs righties.
Cardinals super lucky Suzuki stood there forever on strike 3 as the ball went about 35 feet away from Herrera who ran it down and threw Suzuki out at first.
Tons of ground balls through the infield for hits from the Cubs tonight. I’m not sure if it’s luck, poor positioning, or just good hitting. That last one got right by Winn because he was playing in, allowing two more to score. 5-1 Cubs in a Cubbies hit fest tonight.
Allowing 3 ER’s on 8 hits and 2 BB’s in 3.2 innings of work is well short of a decent turn but, if there’s a silver lining to be found, Liberatore recorded several outs when he desperately needed to do so, which seems to be an impossible task if he’s protecting any sort of lead. Maybe the cure for his woes is to hang a run or two up on the board while he loosens up prior to first pitch.
Liberatore is doing worse than his career numbers. Its a downhill trajectory. For a long time the hype was unrelenting, but it has at last worn off.
I was near to certain that Carlton’s #32 would get him straightened out and on the path to greatness…I was wrong again.
Unless the Cardinals can claw back from this 5-1 Cub’s lead, tomorrow’s game will place them in danger of losing their exclusive status of being the one and only baseball team in the Big Leagues to have never been below .500 during this ’26 season.
Crowbar’s listed at 184 lbs. and a close look during this AB has given me the impression that his forearms account for roughly 80 of those pounds. Pete’s not built cheap.

Got a couple runs on a walk to Walker, a single, and a double. Kudos to Torres with a real nice pinch hit double. It’s a ballgame again even though it feels like we’ve been pummeled due to the hit column.
No one warming so Dobbins at least gets to start the 8th. He’s been solid. He probably only allows one run if we didn’t have the infield in earlier.
Walker smacks the first pitch he sees from the new reliever. I thought it was sneaking over the LF wall. No dice as it’s caught up against the wall to end our chances. 2 innings to go, but this one doesn’t look good.
If the wind had been blowing out to left as strongly as it was earlier, I believe it’s a tie ballgame.
I was fairly certain Dobbins would get sent down after this game. But perhaps he stays up and takes Liberatore’s rotation spot and Libby moves to the pen once JoJo is traded. Maybe?
