Yeah Bike Mike, Sonny’s stuff didn’t look as sharp to me tonight and he didn’t have a put away pitch. He also got ahead of Alonso 0-2 as well. Just missed his spots and the big bats took advantage.
I vaguely recall that AS snub of Al, Bikemike. He was fun to watch for StL. fans, but he really got under the skin of opposing teams.
Yeah, I remember listening to the KMOX broadcasts and Al would do his psyche up routine, and Jack Buck would go “…and it’s show time!” Man, great memeories.
Well this game fell apart quick. Gray just did not have it as ATM said – could not put hitters away like he does when he is on his game.

That was the first really horrible play by Contreras at first that I’ve seen but then he compounded it by not hustling after the ball and allowing the run to score from third…
That inning was a real shame.
Contreras couldn’t catch the ball at 1stbase and that ultimately costs us two runs. Instead of 4-3 now and very doable it’s now 6-3 and that’s probably all she wrote.
I don’t think it’s at all a stretch to say that the Cardinals look to be entirely overmatched to an extent that fans are presented with what looks like a first rate Big League Mets team on the playing field opposing what looks to be a bush league squad. Especially so with the Redbirds dressed out in those city place uniforms.
I had forgotten that Alonso ripped an all time rookie record 53 HR’s. That’s pretty impressive. And he’s been dangerous ever since he cut his teeth as he’s averaged about 40 taters a season.
If anyone other than Leahy, Maton or Helsley comes out of the pen we have no shot! Batting practice!
The Cardinals stuck Contreras at 1B to keep his contract in the lineup. We should keep in mind that he is not an actual first baseman.
Contreras is really a DH! The problem is we have DH’s than any team in MLB History! And even worse none of them can really hit!

It’s becoming clear that when the Cardinals play a team of the Mets calibre, the outcome is near to a foregone conclusion. It’s almost unfair to expect them to compete.
1TD what you say is true but it is really hard to swallow! It’s like we have fallen in the mud and can’t get up! I have a terrible feeling this is gonna be us the rest of this decade at least!
Yeah, it’s no fun watching them lose, Steve60. I get a sense of what it was like to be a Reds or Pirates fan when those teams were required to take the field and play those great Cardinal teams that were stacked with talent in the form of names like Pujols, Molina, Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter, etc. You feel like you have no chance. Hopefully the cycle will come back around to present us with a first rate baseball team before too long.

I get he hasn’t always been on the field but that is a 6 war player in the 2 year prior to this even with his catching. Willson Contreras has not been this teams issue. Lack of talent has been.
Not sure where you are going with this but you are flat out wrong. When he’s been on the field he has been an asset most night than not. That is worth more than Mike Stanton is giving the Yankees.

I pretty much agree with this. Problem with Contreras isn’t his fault. He wasn’t the guy we should have signed to a big contract. It was another screw the Cubs by signing their fa move by Mo. Think Dexter Fowler. Yadi had retired and Mo got cute. We needed a veteran outfielder and a defense first catcher to go along with Knizner. We had plenty of catching talent in the system. I consider this one of Mo’s biggest failures. They embarrassed themselves further by publicly calling out his defense and game management.
Contreras seems to fit right in with the Cardinals of today. He has occasional moments demi-brilliance interspersed with periods of numbing ordinariness. Great catchers are a rare commodity. We are destined to live these days with mediocrity.
CIF Agreed. Right now we don’t have a well balanced player at the position. Good news is it appears we have legitimate prospects on the way. Jimmi Crooks being the closest. Bad news is we have an overpaid converted first baseman.
I don’t understand the complaints about Contreras at 1B. He made an error last night, but it happens. Only 2 on the year. Overall, defensive metrics have rated him as around league average. OAA has him slightly above. I also am not worried about Contreras’s bat (said this 2+ weeks ago as well) as it will pick up.
I also think Contreras is actually good to have on this rebuilding team. Watch the games and tell me who the leader is picking guys up and giving advice. It is Contreras. Having a veteran like him in the dugout is valuable to help teach the younger players.
