Bob, I agree the use of Leahy was odd. I actually figured he was going to be backing up Mikolas in that game as we turned the order over a third time. But I don’t mind them using Graceffo either. At times, when he was pitching in a close game, Graceffo has looked fantastic. And, he needs to be tested and learn from his mistakes. But why Leahy would be pitching in pseudo mop up, I don’t know. Those games were still close though. Behind by 2 is close. So mop up may be an exaggeration.
Last I checked this is 2025 not 1985. We may be nostalgic about the images of a crusty old manager chewing tobacco and ruling with an iron fist. Those days are long gone. Today’s managers are glorified babysitters who had better know how to read a spreadsheet and be up to date on FIP, WHIP, and WRC+.
The manager works for the front office, not the other way around.
Not knowing which relievers are available on any given day is a reason I don’t spend a lot of time agonizing over the choices made.
I hope Leahy isn’t being burned out, but to suggest Marmol is the first Cardinals manager to potentially overuse certain relievers is blatantly ignoring history. Ask Seth Maness, Kevin Siegrist and Trevor Rosenthal about that.
I wish these games were playoff-relevant, but they aren’t. The Cards simply aren’t playing well enough to pass four other teams to get the last Wild Card. God bless those still holding out hope for more than a .500 finish.
FWIW, the example of being four games behind the Cubs is inaccurate. The Cardinals are 11 1/2 games behind the Chicagoans. Whitey managed different teams in a different time – four decades ago. It would have been like comparing Herzog in his day to Billy Southworth in the 1940’s. That was then and this is now.
