RHP Andre Pallante (6-13, 5.38) vs. RHP Justin Verlander (3-10, 4.29)
FOX // KMOX // WIJRÉdgar Rentería, Al Hrabosky and the late Walt Jocketty will be inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame during a 3:00 p.m. ceremony at Ballpark Village. The ceremony is open to the public and will be televised/streamed live on FanDuel Sports Network Midwest. The 2025 inductees will also be recognized during a pregame ceremony on the field at 6:00 p.m.
I’d say Al and Walt most definitely belong but I still don’t at all grasp the concept of Renteria wearing one of those loud red sportcoats. Although he was one of my favorites while he was here, he made it clear immediately following the ’04 WS debacle that he’d rather wear red socks that a red blazer.
Edgar was real good for us and played on one of the greatest of all Cardinals teams, the 2004 bunch. But in terms of WAR as a Cardinal I believe he fell behind Steve Carlton and George Hendrick in this year’s group of candidates. I was hoping big Steve would get in while he is still with us. But I chatted with him some at the National Sports Collectors Convention this summer, and he looks good. Hopefully he will still be able to put on the red jacket and acknowledge the fans as a Cardinal again someday soon. And for a few moments we can all pretend that the trade that never should have happened, never did.
ChiTown – There isn’t another choice. They aren’t going to promote Matthews too early. There is no one else. And besides, Pallante does have the stuff to be successful. He just doesn’t have the consistency and control of it all yet. He keeps making adjustments on the fly. He could do that at Memphis, which might be better for the record of the big league team. But they aren’t playing for anything other than experience right now and there’s no one to replace him anyway. To me, it’s better to let him keep pitching given those circumstances.
There just isn’t anyone else. Hopefully theres learning happening for guys like Pallante and Walker. Actually, that’s all that’s left to gain in 2025. I wouldn’t really expect much elSe in 2026 either. Westerholt may be here. Matthews maybe. I just wouldnt expect a lot of winning.

People make mistakes. Based on how his Red Sox time went, I would give 99% odds that he would do it over if he could.
As far as his selection, he received the most votes from fans this year. The majority has spoken.
Pallante and Walker got screwed by getting beamed up straight from AA due to organizational desperation and incompetence. The same thing happened to Thompspn IIRC.
In regards to Renteria, I just thought he more closely idenifies with either the Marlins or the Giants. Both Al and Walt realized their pinnacle of success while with the Cardinals. And I’d say that Al has probably been associated with the Cardinals as long or longer than anyone cuurently employed by the Cardinal franchise. He’s been around since they were digging the footings for the Pyramids. In any case, I like Renteria but, when I think of him, the Cardinals simply aren’t the first team that enters my mind.
The best story I ever heard about Renteria was told by our old friend Steve Kline…It seems the Cardinals were playing a July day game in the blistering summer heat of StL. Edgar was manned up nearby at his SS position while Kline was taking his warmups on the mound in the miserable summer heat and humidity after being summoned from the BP by TLR. The way Kline related the story was that he could hear Edgar as the Columbian native randomly began to sing an old well known Christmas carol in a very thick and pronounced Latino accent. Kline said he heard the SS loudly crooning the following words to holiday hymn…”Let it no, let it no, let it no”…
Watching the 42 year old future HOF’er place 6 innings of 3 hit shutout work up on the board may be the most entertaining Cardinal game I’ve seen during this disappointing ’25 season.
Through seven innings and guess what?
No runs.
Imagine that.
Oh well, at this point it’s just playing out the schedule.
These Giants see that the Mets have lost tonight. They give the impression that they haven’t packed it in.
The Doyers led Baltimore 3-0 in the last of the 9th at Baltimore.
Yamamoto was one out away from a no-hitter. Just one out away still ahead 3-0 with the bases empty.
Baltimore won the game 4-3.
This one was hard to believe even as I watched it.
Yeah, I followed that Yamamato wannabe no-no on game day, Rats. Unbelievable, but that’s baseball for you.
The Royals won again tonight and have now edged to within one game off the pace for the final ALWC berth. I’d like to see KC sneak in there. Still plenty of time for the teams that are within striking distance. I’ve always thought that teams under pressure that play well in Sept. have an edge going into the post-season. Battle tested and ready for action.
