1. Happy with how the relievers have done. Coming around to this bullpen by committee idea.
2. Sam T. and Mayer’s especially seems to found their stride.
3. Impressed by Weaver and Wacha. Hope to see big years from both.
4. Flaherty, Gant, Hudson a lot of starting pitching depth if any injuries to the set rotation.Dislikes:
1. Not enough guys with options left in the bullpen.
2. With Munoz versatility seems the only reason Greg Garcia is sticking around is as a left handed bat. With 5 young OF prospects it would be nice if at least one of them batted from the left side.
3. 4 man bench, would love to see only 7 in the pen.Overall I think it has been a good spring. Might just be that opening day excitement approaching but I am more optimistic now then I was during the off season.
Lots of likes – Ozuna, Leone, Mayers, Mikolas, Gant, Munoz, Schrock, A. Garcia, Arozarena, etc.
Only one strong dislike, and I’d like to hear from Brian on this.
They’ve put up barricades, so you can’t park next to the minor league fields. That means that fans following the minor leaguers
(Including minor leaguer family members) have to walk around the entire complex to get to the back fields. They claimed that they had a golf cart shuttle, but I never saw it. Whoever made this decision was in error. There were a whole bunch of folks upset about it.Not nearly as much to like about Schrock since he was hurt his entire time in MLB camp. O’Neill’s injuries were another disappointment. Hoped to see more from Norris. Martinez seems a bit indifferent. Valera may have played himself off the roster. Hicks’ approach was another disappointment.
Most of the top prospect youngsters were good – Mayers, Lucas, Flaherty, Hudson, Munoz, Bader, Adolis, Arozarena.
I agree 100 percent about the gate closure. In the last two years, the push for increased security has led to considerable inconvenience. In another example, they no longer let fans back into the MLB games if they leave the park. I went to a game with a friend who forgot his sunglasses in the car. After he went to get them, they would not let him back in. He had to buy a second ticket. How did buying another ticket make him less of a security risk? Just plain ridiculous.
The media is feeling it as well, but I am not going into that, as it might sound like whining.
I saw Schrock play at Port St. Lucie in the AAA game yesterday.
In the first inning, on a rocket to his right up the middle, he went airborne and stabbed the ball midair on it’s 1st bounce. Landed flat on his stomach, scrambled up and got the runner at 1B. On his first at bat, he ripped a single to right. Watched him closely the whole time I was there and was impressed both offensively and defensively. Small sample perhaps, but I really like him.A footnote on the minor league parking. I sat next to a grandfather who is bone on bone needing knee replacement who had to walk all the way around the perimeter to get to the minor league games.
Not smart on the Cardinals part, on multiple levels.Folks could drive around and park on a side street nearer to the minor league fields to shorten the walk, but if you were going back to the main park after, then you would have lost your spot there. I did not find anyone who was sympathetic about any of this. One long-time official just shook his head and said, “The days of spring training being a sleepy little affair are gone forever.”
Brian, when you say Martinez seems indifferent I assume you are talking about Carlos, not Jose. If so, then I agree with your assessment. The lack of focus and fundamentals have prevented CMart from being the ace he could be in my opinion.
