Jeremy Rivas seems like a bit of a surprise. But I guess they want some depth at shortstop and there aren’t many other choices. The only other name that jumps out to me as at least a little surprising is Hence. I’m not shocked because he has such great stuff. He just hasn’t gotten to use it much against upper level competition.

Good to see Parsons there. It was expected, as he’s been there before. On the other hand, 20-year-old Low-A players making the roster are truly exceptional. 27-year-olds with over two years at Triple-A much, much less so. But nice try with the equivalence.

Good signing. If nothing else Barrera’s presence will take some pressure off of Herrera and Pages to progress ASAP. With his major league experience he should be the first one up in ’23 despite his two-way shortcomings. This move will not have an effect on Knizner’s status… the thinking is that he’ll be the backup no matter what.(a poor showing in spring training.) But maybe there will be some competition in the back of his mind which may be good for him.
Maybe Mo wants to avoid burning another of Herrera’s option years if one of the MLB catchers gets dinged up and somebody needs to come up for just a little while. Meanwhile, you don’t have to worry about playing him enough at Memphis to develop. Just enough to stay game ready. That’s how the Berrera signing makes sense to me.
That isn’t how options work. The only way Herrera will NOT use an option in 2023 would be to remain in St. Louis all year, and that seems to be very low odds of happening.
They always have a veteran catcher at Triple-A and this year, Barrera is the guy. He might have to be a quick fill in with St. Louis at some point, but he isn’t going to block anyone.

Nothing besides basic pitching line on Suarez from Korea and Japan. Going back to 2018 and 2019 for a decent sample of MLB, the bottom line is he gets lefties out ok but gets hit pretty hard by righties. Might make an OK loogy, but that lefty one out guy role doesn’t exist now days with the minimum batters faced. I wish him success.

Do you know when the minor leaguers report to Spring Training and when they start games against teams from other organizations? Thanks.I was thinking that we should see a number of DSL or FCL players released soon to make room for the new international signings, but looked back at last year and noticed that the Cards actually have fewer players now than they did last year at this point. I suspect there will be some trimming during ST, but unlike some other teams that drop 8-10 players at a time, we may only see one or two dropped here and there. It will be interesting to see who moves up from last year and who stays at their previous level! (or gets bumped down!)
The team’s equipment trucks will depart Busch Stadium for Jupiter on Monday, February 6.

Haha! That menacing looking Redbird is the one they used to flash years and years ago during commercial breaks which sometimes included Cardinal score updates and finals on the local NBC affiliate. They had two more Redbird images for whenever a final was posted. If the Redbirds won they’d show the image of that same Redbird with his wings spread and flying high with a big smile on his face. If they lost, you’d see that same Redbird with his head down and a sad and sullen look on his face as he dragged a bat behind him looking as though he was slowly walking back towards the dugout after just being victimized by a K for the last out…Haha!
