My father has been a lifelong Cardinal fan for his entire life. He was raised in Missouri but after going away to Vietnam, he never returned there to live but took his Cardinals with him. I remember fondly growing up listening to Cardinal ball games on the radio out on the porch regularly and still at 82 he doesn’t miss listening to a game.
We found out a few weeks ago that he has stage 4 liver and lung cancer. And while he’s never missed listening to or watching a game, he’s never actually been to one and wanted too. He now lives in Indiana and the Cardinals are coming to play the Cubs. My 2 brothers and I are trying to work out the details of getting him to the game on 27th. We can’t really afford the seat prices for the lower seats and he’s not able to do lots of steps while at the same time we hope to make it something eventful. It’s a long shot I’m sure but does anyone have any ideas or know if there are any special programs that maybe honor vets or last wishes that might help me to get him quality sitting for the event?
Welcome Corey! So sorry that your dad has that diagnosis. A familiar story though with the generations that influence our love of the Cardinals. My dad is the biggest reason for my being a fan, dialing in KMOX and getting the broadcasts as good as we could out in Wyomin while I was growing up and regaling me as a kid with the highlights of the previous night’s game when I had to be in bed early.
There must be something that we can do for you guys. There are a couple posters on here that I believe have some degree of a relationship with people in the Cardinal organization. Hopefully we can get help get you guys to a game!
Those were the days weren’t they, BicycleMike. I lived many places as a kid(Janesville, WI, Whitefish Bay, WI, Chagrin Falls, OH, South Euclid, OH and Shaker Heights, OH), but it was at age 6 in Janesville where I discovered baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers had not been in existence for that long, so about 90% of the fans were rabid cubbie diehards. Anyway one couldn’t get the KMOX signal until after the sun went down, so day games were out of the question. And at night the signal constantly faded in and out. It was rare to get a clear signal for longer than about 10 minutes. When you lost your reception, you would play with your antenna or move your radio all around until you found your sweet spot. It was a constant battle to listen to your Cardinals, but looking back, maybe it was this perpetual struggle that helped cement my love to this team.
One has to be careful these days about these things, but Corey’s post looks legitimate. I’ll pony up $100 and hopefully others will step up to the plate too.
I appreciate that guys, but I wasn’t really looking for donations. Though the gesture is so awesome. We’re going to get him to the game on the 27th no matter what. I just thought perhaps there was already some type of program or organization that might help boost the experience.
However, it’s really encouraging to hear such kindness, thank you so much. And your stories about the radio just really brought back a lot of memories.
If the Cardinals don’t have some program for something themselves, I wouldn’t want to impose on your kindness. I’ll keep looking. I still feel like there might be something out there that is designed for guys like him to have a great extra experience.

I was honestly touched to read this thread. I went through a similar situation with a friend of a friend who was has ALS and it’s recently becoming more aggressive so his dream of hitting all the ballparks with his sons sadly needed to completed this summer.
God knows how much money my bank gives to the cardinals every year in overpriced suites/ads/green seats..but when I asked them for a clubhouse tour or something to better accommodate him the response was…nothing.
Good to see that when the big corporate wigs who don’t really care do nothing..the ppl can get together and do something.

Back after a long arduous day at the salt mines yesterday. Sounds as if support is mounting for this wonderful event. I’ve done these GoFundMe’s before, but this rascal isn’t letting me contribute. Trying to do it with PayPal. Any suggestions from those whom also may have been having difficulties, but were able to figure it out. Think 3K……let’s get there!
PayPal was an option for me when I went to the link Corey provided, Pugs. I used that and it was real easy. But I have used PayPal on the device I was using for the gofundme site, and so when I chose to pay via PayPal a message said PayPal recognized this device, and I just needed to confirm a couple of things and it finished up.
