I deeply apologize for the site outage this afternoon/evening.

My host provider, Host Gator, initiated a major outage that took down both the site and the forums. Because the site is getting so popular, it used more of their system resources than they wanted. Instead of contacting me and advising me what to do, they held the site hostage. Further they only provided support via email (no web or phone) and were very, very slow in responding.

After 10 years with HG, I will be investigating a new hosting provider for the future. To say that I am dissatisfied with the treatment I received today would be a major understatement.

I know these are my problems. I am very sorry they became yours, too.

I wondered what happened. I thought maybe my posting got too annoying for you…:o)

I thought that I was a goner. I swear, I was in the middle of a post. Eh, nobody reads my stuff anyway.

That’s funny, I reset the time back an hour on my TV today because it had been an hour off since the conversion from daylight savings time. Obviously it’s not a smart TV. When I reset the time, I noticed the date was Nov 9 instead of Nov 16. I wondered how it lost 7 days. Hmmmmm, it must’ve known…..

Great to see the return of the internet’s best-informed Redbird forum, Brian. And it’s good to be back.

Thank you to all for your comments. You four are the first to discover on your own that the forums are back up.

jj, I wish my code debugging skills were half as good. I got caught in the middle of a major finger-pointing, slow-replying support debacle that I would not wish on anyone.

Even so, I am still glad this site is independent!

That’s a coincidence, Brian! When it comes to the Forums outage, you got caught in the middle of a major finger-pointing. While I reacted to the outage with a major middle-finger pointing.

Really, though, we know you were doing everything possible. You have a Musialesque track record here. One golden sombrero won’t damage your rep too badly.

Unfortunately, just before the site went down I had posted my most insightful, intellectual, and humorous comments ever. It was a clear path that Cardinal management could follow for guaranteed first place finishes and many sellouts, all while staying within budget. But they are lost in cyberspace, and now with the restore back before those were posted, it will be back to my plain old drab commentary.

Those feats of wisdom only come around every few years, and last maybe a day or two. 🙂

While I didn’t discover the forums’ restoration as early as the others, I have been monitoring the situation daily and have been having withdrawals.

Glad to see it’s back up. I know you have been doing everything you could to remedy the situation.

I thought you had written a TCN “Manifesto”. Was worried you had gone all unibomber on us.

Glad to see we are back in business. Brian, I have no doubts you will make the necessary moves to make sure this site continues to be the leader when it comes to Cardinal sites. Mo and company could learn a few things from you.

Also, my wife and I have watched each episode of Manifest. Interesting show.

I might also add that as a fan of an SEC school I would be leery of a company called Host Gator. You can’t trust the Gators…:o)

Some of you trying access the site late this evening may have encountered a server error. There was an outage of approximately one hour, but everything is back and appears to be normal again.

I apologize for the outage which began late Wednesday night/early Thursday and ran into late Thursday morning.

To make a long story short, there is a periodic problem which causes the site to use excessive server resources. Its timing is somewhat predictable, which usually enables us to catch it before it affects other sites that share the server. Unfortunately, last night it got away from us, so the provider shut down this site to protect others.

No notice is given between identifying the problem and shutting down, which stinks, but that is the way it works, I am told. Getting the site turned back on requires testing and verification, which takes time. This is the reason for the delay.

I have initiated the process of moving the site to its own dedicated server as a temporary buffer while the real problem is located and changes are made to address this long-term.

I am sorry for the inconvenience this recent incident has caused.
