I understand teams don’t run like they once did…but shouldn’t the Cards take advantage of the the newer pickoff rule and wider bases and attempt more stolen bases with Winn & Siani?

These two are hitting well and they can both fly. Yet, Winn has only 9 SB and Siani 14. If they ran more would it help the offense? Would help the middle of the order guys?

I don’t know…I see Elly with 55 thefts…Ohtani with 28…Lane Thomas with 28…I’m thinking we need to run more as we sure don’t hit a lot of home runs.

    Thoughts?

Well it appears the brain trust in the dugout doesn’t agree with you and I think the reason is this team has been not great in the department of putting them on base to begin with.

You could argue that they could steal more and it could…could lead to more opportunities but you can also say it could lead to players getting gunned down as well.

Other than Siani and Winn who else do you see as a true burner on the bases? Gorman has 8 steals on the year. I wouldn’t call him quick. This is not a fast ball club by any means. It’s not hitting homers at a great pace either.

Siani has played his way into more of a regular than I think anyone expected. He doesn’t seem to be odd man out with Pham’s arrival. Not any more than anyone else. So maybe now there is reason to work up more of a running game, with two regulars who can take a base.

Edman used to run more, too. I don’t know if it is the difference between Shildt and Oli or numbers from the analytic folks or what… But I agree that part of the game seems to be underutilized, especially given the overall difficulty in scoring runs.

And look…I’m not suggesting Winn & Sinai are Brock & Coleman. What I’m suggesting is they should both be trying to steal 30 – 40 bases in order to put pressure on pitchers and the defense.

Yes, it’s obvious Oli disagrees. I’m not sure why…

I would run more, especially with the two fast guys you mention. It puts pressure on the defense and creates opportunities. The analytics do not show that, but if you can work the running game at opportune times the defense is pressured to cover both the bases and the batted ball. Sometimes you get burned, but especially with Winn and Siani we can succeed more than fail.

I like seeing Siani bunting a little more. That is a weapon he can utilize as well. Winn you want hitting away more with his EBH potential. But once on, he can force some mistakes by being aggressive. As he matures I think we will see him swipe 40+ bases in some years.

Oli or the brain trust must read this board. Wynn singles to open the game and is promptly throw out trying to steal 2nd.
