Qualified for the playoffs last night and is two games behind the Dodgers who they will play tonight and tomorrow. Last night they entered the 9th ahead 4-1 and their closer game up 3 consecutive hits with no one out. With Otani in the on deck circle the Padres pulled off a triple play to end the game. It has been that kind of season for them. They are 25 games over .500
I recently saw athree guys on MLB discussing Shildt. They were unanamous that Shildt deserves the National lLeague Manager of the Year. They point out the improved play and the positive atmosphere vs the season before.
they got hit hard by free agent defections and traded away Juan Soto and their new General Manager rebuilded the team and made some key moves at the trade deadline.Maybe we should try to steal him.
I will always be a Cardinal fan but the Padres are my new team to watch.
Well it wouldn’t be the first time he won NL Manager of the Year. He better watch out for those philosophical differences out in SD.
You win 90 games, including 17 in a row during crunch time, and management should not be too concerned about philosophical differences.
That’s like saying “I sold my investment due to philosophical differences and it is up 25% this year”.
And he led his team to a NLC crown in his first full year as manager in ’19 after the Cardinals had failed to qualify for the post-season for 3 consecutive years. At this season’s end, he’ll have led his teams to the post-season in all four seasons in which he managed the respective team for the entire season. He’s never managed a team that’s missed. Not too shabby.
Yeah, astute management would have said, “He runs counter to our thoughts on things, but he wins so he does something right.”
But our management group feels like they have the monopoly on winning philosophy, and anyone that goes a different direction will not be employed.
After 2022, I wonder if Marmol was thinking, “What’s all the fuss about managing?”
I really wasn’t a fan of the Schildt hire however it appears that he’s proven me wrong.
I seem to recall thinking Matheny would do ok since he had been a catcher for LaRussa.
I hated the Marmol hire.
Its a shame. The cardinals fire a winning manager and in my eyes try to taint him on his way out the door but but yet wont fire a bad manager who had the worst season in recent memory. The evidence for the disorganization of this franchise was in plain sight all along.
Marmol isn’t the problem. He may not be a part of the solution but he’s not to blame for the behind the curtain view the Woo article just exposed.
That amount of behind the scenes info on the Cardinals is unusual and I bet Bill and Mo are on a witch hunt this morning trying to figure out who talked to Woo.
They should just fire themselves and Junior and call it a week.
