I think Edman was playing CF to up his trade value.
They need to focus on looking for good deals on pitching at the deadline, even if trades leave the roster clunky looking. This winter is the time to sort out the roster.

jj-cf-stlParticipantNo need to add Winn to the 40man and debut him.
A .740 ops at AAA likely gets the bat knocked out of his hands at mlb, long term. Pass. Give the kid time.
Move on from PDJ. Start Edman at SS and Gorman at 2B. With Donovans D flexibility, and the need for at least 4 outfielders, no logjamb.
July 13, 2023 at 5:50 pm #227828Big League pitchers literally knocked the bat from Ozzie Smith’s hand for several season’s and he eventually collected almost 2500 base hits. Winn won’t learn how to hit Big League pitching in Memphis. Let him get acclimated to the next level while his weak bat makes absolutely no difference to the fortunes of this team. Moreover, he’ll sell a few tickets.

July 13, 2023 at 9:07 pm #227853Remember what happened to Wong when he started to get too expensive… He was let go, replaced by minimum-salaried Edman. Not saying it will happen now, but it could at some point… Getting something for him in trade vs. potentially non-tendering him and getting nothing later is at least worth considering.

We got this. Everybody knows Mo is Mr December.

Yes.
July 14, 2023 at 7:28 am #227865No doubt they are seeing what they can get for DeJong, who would probably be packaged in a deal. If the deadline comes and goes and DeJong is not dealt, I wonder if they would DFA him and play whoever is still with the club (Donovan or Edman) at short the remainder of the season, or let Winn play out the season to get some big league reps in advance of his future as the Cardinal’s primary shortstop.
Might not be a bad idea to give Brendan 60-some games at short to see how he handles it, assuming he is still here.
July 14, 2023 at 9:46 am #227871My take is the FO doesn’t see Donovan as an everyday shortstop, and they already know he can play there, so I don’t think they see any need for an extended look.
I see DeJong and Edman as the ones to go. But who knows. If Mo can get a deal he likes on pitching, it could be Gorman and Donovan to go. If a seller of controllable pitching can’t get what they want from the Cardinals, they will have other potential buyers lined up.

I get folks are down on DeJong and he is a lame duck, but here are his rankings among NL shortstops (200 AB min):
HR 3rd
RBI T9th
SLG 4th
OPS 6thThat isn’t all-star territory, nor is it DFA material. But I am sure another club would be happy to take him if the Cards agree to pay his salary.
July 14, 2023 at 1:26 pm #227885DeJong has an OPS+ of 99, which means he is a league-average player.
Cardinals with a lower OPS than DeJong:
Burleson
Edman
Carlson
Knizner
O’Neill
etc…July 14, 2023 at 4:31 pm #227903
jj-cf-stlParticipantYeah I remember the Wong discussion. I also voiced the unpopular “allowed to test free agency” prediction before it happened.
I also remember the Jamie Garcia article that followed, meant to suggest they wouldn’t allow Wong to walk w/out a return.
If they move on from PDJ by free agency this winter, Edman is going nowhere, he’s the 2024 SS. If the seller of controllable pitching can’t live without Tommy, he could be gone next week.
One of PDJ or Edman will be on the roster in 2024 imo. Edman is the correct bridge to Winn, eventually.
