The 1H @sabr Defensive Rankings are out. #STLCards have the top fielder in the NL, Kolten Wong, but some surprising and not surprising laggards, as well. Dig into the numbers here. https://t.co/UzmAb7IFZP pic.twitter.com/0wCKdQWXPC

stlcard25ParticipantThe scores seem to tell us mostly what our eyes have seen.
Wong has really made himself something with the glove and that’s a boon to the team. If he hits around average, that’s a plus going forward.
Yadi maybe is one I might quibble a bit with but I’m not sure how exactly the rankings are tabulated. If anything, he seems to maybe be taking it a bit easier on some of the things that he went all out on earlier in his career, perhaps to save wear and tear on his body?
Pham’s bad defense is another one that is a bit of a surprise. I didn’t expect him to be in Dexter Fowler territory as a CF so quickly. He should definitely move to a corner by next year.

ParticipantCarp is a pleasant surprise.
July 24, 2018 at 7:46 am #61819The measures did not change but there has surely been a decline for Molina specifically in however they measure catcher defense. There are five metrics blended into the overall SDI. One can dig into them via the links in the article.
Agree about Carp. In fact, he just made the top 25 in the NL.
July 24, 2018 at 8:01 am #61821I’ve watched 90% of our action this year and nothing really surprised me in the report, other than Weaver! Smaller sampling of my views with the pitchers I guess.
On Yadi, my thoughts were he has noticeably regressed this year, he just doesn’t move and position his body as well now. Expected.
One place in the article says “Pham” where it should say “Wong”.

ParticipantYadi is not playing the same game he played five years ago and certainly not playing up to that contract. Leave it to the FO to not only extend his contract, but to give him all that money. I think many of the Cards are just cashing checks at this point. Schlitz has a lost cause on his plate, delivered piping hot from Mozeliak.
The old blond Molina ain’t what he used to be……….. not even close. SDI… Molina = 11th, and he is being paid elite $$. Another giant blunder by Mozeliak.
July 24, 2018 at 9:05 am #61832I do not see the contract extension to Molina as a “giant blunder”. The guy is still a leader, and a decent offensive player. And you could say that some of that money is compensation for his tenure with the ball club.
Sometimes you pay a guy as much for the intangibles he brings to the organization, as for the black-and-white production numbers.

stlcard25ParticipantWell said, Mike.
July 24, 2018 at 9:25 am #61838Euro, thanks for letting me know about the mistake. I fixed it now. One of the downsides of posting seven new articles in one day. Worse when the author and editor are the same person, but it goes with the territory.
July 24, 2018 at 10:45 am #61851shows that not only is Pham playing poor defense but really bad defense.15th of 17.We know Fowler is playing bad in all facets of his game.Seems Phams .300 BA in July might keep him from nailing the trifecta of ineptitude( Poor Hitting,Poor Fielding,Poor baserunning). So far Fowler has a stranglehold on the trophy.
July 24, 2018 at 11:26 am #61854Piscotty is dead last in the AL in RF.
Grichuk is 5th
July 24, 2018 at 12:50 pm #61866Speaking of Piscotty, I noticed his defensive struggles a couple days ago. I was watching the As/Giants and that prompted me to look him up in Fangraphs. I was surprised at his low defensive numbers. I also saw their impressive young reliever Trivino and wondered if there was any way we could’ve wrestled him away in the deal. 😉
August 31, 2018 at 3:51 pm #67603In the newest update, Wong still is on top.

stlcard25ParticipantThe defense up the middle has been quite good, as I believe Dejong is at 13 DRS and Yadi has been solid, if not as spectacular as he once was. I believe the pitching staff has been rated well by the metrics too.
November 6, 2018 at 3:26 pm #74132In looking at the Cardinals defensive stats, I have noticed a few surprising things. Carpenter had more errors at 1B than Martinez despite playing less innings there and having fewer chances. Everyone who played 3B for the Cardinals in 2018 had a fielding percentage that was below league average.
I am watching the July 19th Cubs-Cardinals game that was shown on ESPN that I taped. There were 2 errors (Gyorko and DeJong) in the 1st 5 innings and several plays by OFers (Fowler and Pham) that definitely allowed at least 3 runs to score. In addition, the first error seemed to affect Martinez’ pitching. He was cruising until the 1st error then he seemed to lose his concentration. He also ended up throwing a lot of pitches is that inning.
I think these underscore the need to move on from Martinez and Fowler. It also brings up whether the Cardinals could come up with a way to trade Carpenter without hurting the team offensively.
