It was looking like he had his cancer beat, or at least arrested. Even though I detest the cubbies, this news greatly saddens me. RIP Ryno……you were one of the great ones!
Yeah, played for our rivals but really a great player. You just had to tip your hat to him. Will be heading to Chicago Wednesday for the National Sports Collectors Convention. I am sure there will be some Sandberg tributes there.

I saw where he was declared cancer-free, only to have it return a few months later. I also saw Deion Sanders was said to be “cured” from his bladder cancer after his recent surgery.
On a personal pet peeve note, I cringe when I read that. Positive attitude is great and extremely important when dealing with cancer, but saying things like “cancer-free” and “cured” almost seems like tempting fate. It happens so often, and no doctor alive knows where and when that stuff might be hiding and lying in wait ready to strike again. Don’t wake a mean sleeping sonofabitch. Not that it really matters, it’s just a quirk.
Nice post, Euro! Last June while riding around one day, I felt some discomfort in my lower back area. That evening I started urinating pure blood, so I went down to the ER and ended up spending several hours there. The CAT scan revealed a thickening in the bladder, but I was told it was most likely due to the infection, so they gave me some antibiotics to swallow and a prescription for more. The next day I received a call saying that I needed to see a Urologist as the positioning of the bladder needed further review. So at this Urology appointment they stick this thing with a camera on it in you and even allow you to see what’s in there…..and mine was pretty gross. I had this large globby mass with a bunch of red veins. The Urologist said it appeared to him that it most likely was embedded into the bladder wall. I asked him if he thought it was cancer and he responded that we would not know for sure until they conducted a biopsy. Then I asked him if he had ever seen something like this and it ended up not being cancerous and he paused for a few seconds and then said…..”not yet”. Anyway to shorten a longer story, it ended up not being cancerous. Thinking you have cancer and all of the ramifications along with it really sucks…….but doesn’t come close to the situation that people like Ryno have had to endure.
Didnt hear about thid til today. I dont tend to give any cubs any credit but sandberg was a great player. Cancer is a rough thing. Ive seen a few that thought they had it beat but sadly it wasnt the case. May his family find peace as well as him.
Pugs, glad you didn’t have the real nasty stuff. I’m sure I wouldn’t be far off likening your anxiety of waiting on biopsy results to watching Rosenthal close out a another Cards’ victory from a few years ago.
Coincidentally, a couple weeks ago I had the same or similar procedure you described to inspect the bladder (mine was a cystoscopy). It’s where the urologist takes a tube, otherwise known as a catheter, and sticks it in and through your…um, never mind.
You can really see the innards of the bladder, lol. Fortunately, mine was not done for suspicion of anything nasty like cancer. It was just to see what might be contributing to a mid 60s guy peeing too many times at night, hehe. I guess practically all of us get this annoying enlarged prostate issue if we live long enough.
Thanks Euro. Yeah for a good month there I thought my goose was cooked. One of the worst things for me about having that tube inserted into my bladder was having the Urologist’s assistant right there at his side. On a looks scale of 1-10, she was a solid 9+. Normally of course you’d want to be in the company of such beauty…….but certainly not under these conditions. For some reason, I’m still not believing that Ryno is gone……and I hated him as a player because of the team he played for. I used to check the morning box scores daily and one of the first things I checked was how Ryno fared. An 0-4 always brought a smile to my face. Ryno was usually a very slow starter through April and sometimes May, but then he’d heat up big time.
