He hit .230 in July BobReed. Maybe they don’t want to make that kind of move because a guy got hot for a month. I know he has been a pretty good hitter, but until the last several weeks nothing extraordinary.
September 3, 2021 at 1:53 pm #171554I think it can be argued from multiple sides. He surely is hot, but pinch hitting is very different from playing daily.
Yepez isn’t exactly rotting in Triple-A, having been there for only 76 games.
He made two errors yesterday. He might have more to learn.
There is also no reason to believe that he couldn’t be promoted tomorrow, if someone is injured. For me, if there is a starting job on a corner available, I would give him a look. Right now, there isn’t one, no matter who some posters would like to bench or release.
This is not unlike what I said when Woodford was not promoted two days ago. Things change.

ParticipantGary LaRocque must be embarrassed by this.
September 3, 2021 at 2:18 pm #171562Or not.
September 3, 2021 at 7:30 pm #171575Forget August, and forget July. Let’s just look at what the 23-year-old Yepez has done overall since arriving in Triple-A.
.294/.390/.617
That’s a 1.007 OPS for a team where #1 prospect Nolan Gorman needed a 4-hit game last night just to push his Memphis OPS over .800. In other words, Yepez has been downright tremendous in Triple-A — not just for a few weeks. But how about Double-A, earlier in the year?
.270/.387/.571
That was pretty darn terrific as well. Let’s just say, he’s been much better at hitting across AA and AAA than Jake Woodford has been at pitching, at the same levels. Not a proper comparison.

And Forschy, if we were in the middle of June or July I would absolutely agree with your earlier comment about Yepez needing regular AB’s at Memphis more than he needs 8-10 AB’s per week in the majors. For a developing player, prior to September, I would 100% concur.
But this is September. This is crunch time, guys. This team might wind up under .500 for all I know. But right now, in this moment, this team might really have a use for a big bat. Either in the lineup once or twice in place of Carlson versus righties (Dylan has a mediocre OPS against righties, both this year and last) or just as a high-leverage pinch-hitter.
And I’ll say this just one more time, as a reminder. The club has promoted Ali Freaking Sanchez, rather than by far the best hitter on the club’s Triple-A team. It takes one whopper of a rationalization to justify that.

ParticipantAs I said, Gary must be embarrassed. He has stated at Winter Warm Up that if you produce, the Cardinals will promote you and reward your performance. Especially when you produce well at the AAA level, against high level minor league competition. So who do they promote? A guy who had been in Japan the last 8 years and has a 9+ ERA in a short stint at Memphis. With a WHIP of 2.32. 20 hits in 10 1/3 innings.
How does Gary explain that to some of the other Memphis players?September 3, 2021 at 10:40 pm #1715891982 willie
ParticipantYea why Dickson is wasting a spot I don’t know. Yea I guess he can eat in innings in games like tonight but otherwise he shouldnt even be pitching anywhere let alone the majors.

ParticipantBrian knows the Cards system backward and forward. Do you know any reasons why he was promoted over other guys, Brian?
Was it to give him a little major league payroll time before Hudson is brought up?September 4, 2021 at 8:24 am #171607Lee
Participantthat would make sense bccran. I also think it may have been in his contract…

ParticipantWe’ll see if any other moves are made. Never quite seen the 40 man look like this. Should the following take up a spot?
Brandon Dickson – 37 years old
Justin Miller – 34 years old
Andrew Miller – 36 years old
Johan Quesada
Brandon Waddell
T. J. Zeuch
Max Moroff
Justin Williams
CMart – will be gone anywaySeptember 4, 2021 at 9:28 am #171610Bob, I am not saying I think Yepez shouldn’t be brought up. I am saying that I think Schildt wouldn’t play him if he is brought up. I don’t think he would get 8-10 plate appearances a week. He would be better off starting in Memphis and hitting even though he could possibly help the big league team.
September 4, 2021 at 11:05 am #171615Maybe Mo doesn’t want to fill up the 40 man with guys he doesn’t want to get rid of if he comes across some good stuff this winter. Having a bunch of roster slots would be helpful.
As to Dickson, his deal probably required a September call up. Mo didn’t do anything to position the active roster for post season, so I guess it doesn’t matter. We’re mailing this one in, maybe sneak into the second WC and get creamed by the Dodgers or Giants, maybe pack up after the regular season.

ParticipantForsch – He has to put his toe in the water sometime to see what major league pitching looks like, which will tell him what he still needs to work on.
September 4, 2021 at 12:54 pm #171626It is common for teams to want 3 catchers in September so promoting Sanchez wasn’t surprising. Dickson, on the other hand, is a head scratcher.
September 8, 2021 at 5:32 pm #171945Like I wrote at the time, Dickson was not going to be on the 40-man long. Eight days to be exact.

September 8, 2021 at 6:42 pm #171952I wonder if it bumps his MLB pension somehow.
