MLB Hall of Famer Billy Mazeroski has passed at 89. A somewhat controversial HOF selection, Maz is best remembered for his amazing glove at second and his walk-off, series ending home run to beat the Yankees in the 1960 October Classic. By all accounts, a really good guy.
RIP…only true hops off batted balls in heaven.

ParticipantI can remember exactly where the school bus, that I was riding in, was when Mazeroski hit that HR. A lot of other kids were listening on their little transistor radios…. and they were all Yankee fans…. except me. Berra going back…. back. Surely a piece of baseball legend with one swing…. sending that pitch over the wall at the old Forbes Field. Perfect. RIP Mr. Bucco.

ParticipantIf he had an amazing glove. Im not sure its controversial.
February 21, 2026 at 11:38 am #301455His election remains somewhat controversial due to his 36 career fWAR and .260 career BA (with little power).
However, I saw him play and no one was smoother at second base.

I met Maz back in 1972. My buddy and I were teenagers, and his dad arranged for us to take a trip to St. Louis and see six games, three against the Pirates and three against the Phillies. We stayed in the old Stouffers Riverfront Inn, and as it turned out the visiting teams stayed there as well.
Our room was on the fourth floor, and we got on the elevator from the lobby at the same time as Maz. He pushed somethhing like the 20th floor, so I pushed 23 just so we could spend a little time with Maz. Do not even recall what we talked about in those 30 seconds or so, and we were too timid to ask for an autograph.
Tough month for the Buccos as they lost Elroy Face, and now Maz. RIP gentlemen!
February 23, 2026 at 10:17 am #301536That Maz homer would have to rank very high on the all time list. Another one would be the Bobby Thomson homer although that was just a pennant winner.
February 24, 2026 at 12:19 pm #301620I was a bit too young for Maz’s WS heroics. But we’re getting to the age now where these baseball greats from our youth will be dropping like flies. Which unfortunately puts many of us here on the chopping block in the not too distant future. This wonderful site here needs to keep trucking with or without us. Hopefully Brian has a viable plan to replace us as we float off to that big diamond in the sky.
