Always one of my favorites as a youngster. The last living member of the Phil’s Whiz Kids… he was 93. He had three very good years for the Cards in the early 60’s, among them was a career high of 18 wins in the Card’s World Championship 1964 season. He was known as always being a true gentleman…. let there be peace in your final resting place.
Picked up off the scrap heap as they say, in 1960 after he hurt his arm and the Phillies released him. A real hard thrower and big time prospect as a younger player, he reinvented himself as an off-speed, “junk” thrower with a herky-jerky delivery. Hank Aaron hated hitting against Simmons as it was tough to time his pitches.
Simmons averaged a little under 4 WAR per season with us, and won roughly 70 games in about 5 full seasons. And as has been said, a member of the ’64 Champions as well as the 1950 Phillies Whiz Kids. Did not get to pitch in the 1950 World Series as he had a military commitment.
Lifetime 193 wins and 43.3 WAR, so a pretty darn good lefthander.
Curt was truly a “pitchers pitcher”. Not overpowering.. but a master of changing speeds, and controlling the “marginal hitting areas” of the plate, neutralizing the better hitters that he opposed. Rest in peace Curt.
