He was 65.
130 stolen bases in one season. Phenomenal.

December 21, 2024 at 2:18 pm #273651Real sad news. I always liked Rickie not only for his immense baseball talent, but also for his brash and humorous personality. Not only was he undoubtedly the greatest lead-off hitter of all time, but I also never saw any other baseball player who was more of an offensive force on a baseball field than was Rickey Henderson. He was genuine mayhem whenever he reached base and always came around to score. “When you see him sitting in the dugout during warmups, the scoreboard already reads 1-0″…
Edit…I had forgotten that Rickey was born on Christmas Day. RIP, Rickey.

December 21, 2024 at 3:44 pm #273658Man, Rickey was not that old. Willie Mays debuted in 1951 and just passed away earlier this year. Rickey debuted almost 30 years later. Great player. Sorry to see this.

ParticipantI was very disapointed to read this in an article. Bad thing was it wasnt even a front page type article, it was buried in another aeticles feed. To me ricky was and is the deadliest guy i ever saw on a baseball field far as what he could do. Just by getting walked, he created chaos. Should be bigger news to me. Also very sad that he was just 65. Just 6 years above me. I dont know how in shape he still was but it just goes to show that pneumonia can take out anybody. May you steal a few more bases in heaven ricky.
December 22, 2024 at 2:25 pm #273711According to espn, “He launched 297 home runs, including a major league-record 81 to lead off a game…”
I saw him a play a couple of times, in Oakland, and with the Pads toward the end of his great career.
December 22, 2024 at 4:05 pm #273720Practically all of the news coverage regarding Rickey’s passing points out what almost everyone knows which is that “The Man of Steal” is the all time SB leader. But let’s not forget that Rickey stepped on HP more than any other Big League baseball player. Runs are pretty important in the game of baseball and Rickey Henderson scored 2295 of them…”When Rickey gets on, Rickey scores.”
