ParticipantThe Cardinals are never honest/accurate about their injuries. This situation with Edman shouldn’t surprise anyone who has been paying attention. He’s not close in my opinion.
If that’s the case…. the Edman injury/return becomes the biggest story at Spring training. No one can figure out the infield or outfield arrangement without first knowing when #19 will lace ’em up.
March 1, 2024 at 10:14 am #243280Mozeliak told me that he simply forgot to tell the media. He seemed to consider it to be less serious that it has turned out to be. The regular season-ending press meeting was not held last fall, perhaps because there was very little good to discuss.
At WWU in mid-January, Edman said he had started throwing and taking ground balls and was cleared for full lifting. He said he needed to get to full motion and deal with expected swelling. After surgery, his wrist was immobilized, ligaments were tight. Rebuilding from that, not surgery. At that time, he hoped to get into two weeks of spring games. I wonder if he’d say that now…
March 1, 2024 at 4:00 pm #243285If Edman is a no-go for now, and there is uncertainty as to his return, then the Crawford signing makes more sense.
March 1, 2024 at 5:51 pm #243286I guess we’re less worried about backing up center field.
March 1, 2024 at 6:08 pm #243287Center field is not as worrisome as it appears Carlson is healthier than Edman. And Nootbaar can move over there as well, with Burleson going to left. Not great defensively, but it can be done in a pinch.
March 1, 2024 at 7:52 pm #243288And then, whoever does the most to impress during ST gets Edman’s spot on the roster. The candidates would seem to be Moises Gomez, Matt Koperniak, Alphonso Rivas, and Jared Young.
March 1, 2024 at 8:05 pm #243289Mud – I’m pretty sure there’s only one candidate to replace Edman and it’s Burleson. Now if someone else gets hurt, then maybe it’s one of those guys.

It makes me sense that the front orifice feels that the injury is worse than first thought to be. AND, of course, this is all hush-hush.
March 4, 2024 at 7:24 am #243322When did we first know Edman had the wrist issue, when did the team shut him down, and when did he actually have the surgery?

I would think Siani would be 1st in line above that group.
March 4, 2024 at 11:50 am #243329Depending on how the Cards feel about Nootbaar as the backup CFer, Siani could make it over Burleson. Siani would generally be more useful I would think.
March 4, 2024 at 1:34 pm #243334If Edman isn’t ready, I would give the odds as:
Burly 75%
Scott 20%
All others 5%If Edman is going to be out for a long time, I would improve all of the real CFers’ odds somewhat. JMO…
March 4, 2024 at 6:17 pm #243360In support of jnevel’s view, Katie Woo also likes Siani’s chances. (Her assumption is that Edman won’t be out too long…)
In the same article, she says the plan all along is for Crawford to not play until mid-month.

March 4, 2024 at 7:00 pm #243362Why is it Crawford is not playing until mid month?
March 4, 2024 at 9:59 pm #243366Because he doesn’t need the practice of course.
March 5, 2024 at 8:18 am #243371Players report to camp and work out for a couple of weeks before they play in their first game. It was that way for the players who came to camp on time last month. So it is with Crawford now. There is no reason to rush him, especially given he missed so much of 2023 with various injuries. The pace of his ramp up is nothing to be concerned about, IMO.
