I see where Red passed. Seems like we ought to have a thread for one of the all time Cardinal greats.

I loved him. The first manager I remember in the Cardinals dugout. Stan and Red exemplified the very best of what wearing the Birds on the Bat should mean – class, graciousness and humility.

Can a guy get a red jacket like the one Red is wearing in the pic? I’d like to have one like it to go along with my green Masters jacket.

Ditto on the “One of my dad’s favorites”. I still recall it clear as can be back in 1964 – I was a kid of course, and my dad tells me “I think the Cardinals got a great man to be their new manager”. This was after the big circus where Johnny Keane lead the Cardinals to the World Championship, then resigned and took over as manager of the Yankees, the team the Cards had just beaten. Then he told me that the Cardinals announced Red would be the manager.
I met Red back in the ’90s at an autograph event here in Denver. The Cardinals were struggling, and I teased him a little about maybe coming back and managing again. He laughed it off and said no way he was doing that again.
Thinking back on those days in the late ’40s and ’50s, that must have been a terrific life. Stan and Red riding the trains, playing ball. Perhaps we romanticize the past more than it deserves, but those guys had a terrific life.
As Rats said, they are probably reliving some great memories, along with Jack. Harry is probably there as well.
When he filled in in 1990 i was so impressed, the team needed a hand and he showed up and did it, i know he wasnt as old in 1990 as he was when he passed, but it exemplified the idea of being a Cardinal… you do it for life…and Red was a Cardinal for life
Even Stan I can picture without his Cardinal uniform from time to time, but not Red…when i thought of him and how i will always think of him, is in that Cardinals uniform…and just like the uniform, changing ever so slightly as time passes on, Red too filled it and changed ever so slightly as time went on. And while the outside changes the inside never will.
Red was the embodiment of everything i hope to be as a fan of the team, a Cardinal through and through, from youth to death, always dedicated and and always loving.
That’s interesting how you always see Red in a Cardinal uniform, Jags, but can picture Stan without his uniform. I am the opposite. The first baseball card I ever got of him (Schoendienst) was the 1961 Post cereal card, and he is a Milwaukee Brave. I knew even then as a youngster that Red had played for the Cardinals a long time, as he was back with them as a veteran bench player and pinch-hitter then, and my dad talked about him quite a bit.
But my earliest memories are of him as a Milwaukee Brave. Now, as a sports card collector for some 30 years, I have all sorts of Schoendienst cards, from the early ’50s to his days as Cardinal manager. His 1957 card is in a Giants uniform, then ’58 – ’60 Topps are Braves. Then ’61 Topps is one of those “no hat” cards where he is in a Braves uniform, but the team designation is the Cardinals. And as I said, ’61 Post cereal he is with the Braves, but there is a comment on the card saying he was “traded to St. Louis”. Cards after that are all with the Cardinals of course, either as a veteran player or manager.
