Maybe someday in the future the Cardinals will land a field manager who features both practical experience and proven succes like Herzog, LaRussa, or Bochy. It’d be nice to see something along those lines, but I can’t envision anyone involved in the upper management of the current regime possessing the testicular fortitude to tell anyone of the three aforementioned guys what to do. So, what Cardinal fans are subjected to are names like Matheny, Shildt and Marmol.
I am surprised as well, as I figured Bochy was retired for good after leaving San Francisco. This is a great hire by the Rangers. What was it, 2012 or 2014, where Bochy managed circles around Mike Matheny in that post season series we had with them.
LaRussa just retired (again) at age 78, and Dusty Baker is 73. Bochy at 67 should have a few good years left.
I wonder if Joe Maddon will get another shot. He is 68.
Jim Leyland is 77. He was a great manager.
To me the game today is ripe for a team to have a guy like whitey leading things. To me a proven guy who understands baseball strategy and knows how to build a team within certain economic factors that can be even better than the sum of its parts could work very well over a long haul. To me it’s how small market teams could rise up and have those good years back in the day. To me, adding more teams to the playoff mix doesn’t help those teams, this isn’t football. Sure the padres and Phillies have done well but they sprnd lots of money so they aren’t some small market team. Adding teams hurts teams like the dodgers but it doesn’t help the pirates of the world in my opinion by itself anyway. Now if you throw a crafty manager with some team control into the mix then we have a different story. I wish the Cardinals had hired brochy but only if they were going to let him do his job.
