Good Morning,
I’m a complete rookie on this board and I don’t know the rules and policies on what questions we’re allowed to ask….but I will ask it anyway.My Disclaimer: I know hardly anything about the fundamentals of baseball. I’ve hardly posted anything on this board…so please don’t chastise me. I only learn… if I ask the question. And to some it may be stupid… but that’s how people learn.
To you folks that are very knowledgeable….
Why doesn’t Matt Carpenter bunt?????
Is it his decision not to? Is he afraid to? Is it coaches signaling him not to?
All are serious questions…. Does anybody really know why… or have an honest opinion?

PS: My questions are not to slam Matt Carpenter!!! From what I’ve seen from the past, he is
a good player and I’m not discrediting his talent.Maybe because he can’t bunt?
By that I mean he feels like he is incapable of bunting the ball toward’s thirdbase. He’s not the fastest guy and unless he bunts it far enough the pitcher would probably be able to field it and throw him out. Besides, like all the other big league players nowadays all Carpenter wants to do is slug.
And not to worry, I am sure many others have wondered the same thing.
More than likely we won’t have to worry about him in 2022. The only way he is back in St. Louis next year is if he has a renaissance the rest of this year AND the DH is brought to the NL next year.

As MO pointed out, Carp is married to his approach. He is oblivios to his approach cheating on him and laughing behind his back.
One of the mysteries of the universe. Evidently the latest spreadsheets, coaches, managers, etc., don’t recommend bunting. It’s not manly. Threading the needle through a shift feels better and just looks cooler.
Amazing that a guy, after a few years of huge success, felt compelled to significantly change his swing and hitting approach. Even more amazing that this same guy, after struggling in a big way after the change, does not feel compelled to un-change that failed swing and hitting approach. Carp is an old dog now and doesn’t need another pay day.
Two things, first, the optimized swing Gestapo has worked him over just like everyone else. The idea that opponents can observe, video, dissect and analyze that swing and devise pitching and defensive strategies to counter it did not occur to Mo’s wonks. Each bunt attempt is one less chance to barrel it on the sweet spot and obtain optimum launch angle and exit velocity. That same thing is also likely why O’Neill has a 30% K rate. Second, the game has evolved and he is unwilling to adjust which adopting a different approach would require.
