ParticipantAs the Cardinals move into this off season with a stated desire to put more emphasis on player development,
it might be interesting to look at guys we’re pretty sure are going to
make it, and some possible dark horses. On the pitching side, there seems to be a lot of excitement about McGreevy, Mathews, and Hence.
On the position player side it might be JJ, Crooks, Scott, and Saggese. But who might be breakout guys from the rest of the pack? What about Graceffo? Or Rajcic? Or Davis? Or Cho?
Lastly, whom would you trade to bring in a proven major leaguer or two.
October 24, 2024 at 12:50 pm #270400BCran – I think we’re heading to this discussion very soon with our prospect ratings.
Stlcard25 is going to start up the annual rankings in a few days. That will give us ample opportunity to discuss who we like and don’t like.
But to answer your last question, for me it’s trade Tink Hence yesterday. Let someone else shoulder the risk and get a quality player or players back. I felt the same way before he started missing starts. The upside is there. But the potential to turn into Alex Reyes is also high. He’s our most overrated prospect simply because of the high injury risk.

ParticipantWould Hence be better converted to a closer?
October 24, 2024 at 12:56 pm #270403Probably. But I really don’t know. Closers can still get pretty worn out.
Obviously this is just my opinion. Lots of good prospect evaluators love Hence and some think he’s our best prospect.
October 24, 2024 at 1:07 pm #270405I will go out on a limb and guess that Saggese will get traded. I am hoping they move away from his profile. High strike out power hitter wannabe who cant take a walk. An infield UT with a right side arm who strikes out too much is not hard to find.
October 24, 2024 at 1:25 pm #270407As a rookie in limited at bats he was about 3% above average in K rate. Better that Victor Scott. Better than Siani. Basically identical to Pages. Winn was the only better rookie (and better by a mile).
I get it though. He struck out quite a bit at Memphis as well.
October 24, 2024 at 6:15 pm #270423Might be interesting to deal Helsley and audition Hence as closer this Spring.
Regardless on Tink, we should be able to get a nice return for Helsley and are hopefully talking to other organizations about a possible deal.
I think Koperniak is on the club out of Spring training next year. Certainly too old to be an exciting prospect, and not exactly a dark horse, but he might surprise some folks and edge his way on to the roster.
