Anything else I need to say on the topic? I mean, this was the first sign of organization incompetence, making this guy the pitching “coach”. Or as it when they named him the teams pitching strategist? Yeah, the real pitching coach, Maddox, saw the direction the front office was headed with this, so he beat feet to Texas and a World Series. I see no actual credentials Dusty Blake had or has to be a MLB pitching coach. Carry a folded up chart of who knows what in his back pocket? After 50 plus years of watching the Cardinals games, I find I can barely watch 3 innings of a game. I mean, if your starting outfield is Donovan, Nootbar, and Siani, and, you, as leadership who built the roster think that is a championship trio, its time to be replaced. Its called the eye test from someone who has watched MLB for over 50 years, I don’tneed OPS numbers or anything else.

Punch, guys whose baseball experience is heavy in face stuck in a spreadsheet or glued to a radar gun have no idea how this 50 years eye test thing works. The Cardinals organization ODed on data. Hitters are completely overloaded. There is only 0.4 seconds from mound to plate.

The problem began when the Cardinals decided it was not their goal to win championships, it was merely their goal to make it to the playoffs and see what happens. As the playoffs keep expanding, their goals become lower and lower.

Welcome Punch. Yeah, the downgrade from Maddux to Blake is significant. The pitchers are doing okay this year, but Blake just does not seem like a real strong leader. Maddux has that presence – he goes out there, puts his hand on the pitcher’s shoulder and seemed to really communicate. And maybe Blake is stronger in his mound presence than he appears, but from out here he looks clueless.

Cardinals have had some very noteworthy pitching coaches. Most recently Dave Duncan who’s in line for one of those red jackets and Hub Kittle was the stuff of baseball lore, but the best pitching coach I’ve ever seen in my time as a Redbird fan may have been Yadier Molina…

You are right about Dusty Blake. But the game has changed. It’s not just a Cardinals thing. Metrics and anylitics play a large role in every teams strategy. I been watching or listening to pretty much every Cardinals game, plus reading and discussion, for 57 years. Embrace the game the way its played today or whine about the good old days and the “eye test”. But you aren’t going to make it go away. Read some information and study the new metrics. You might be surprised and enjoy the challenge of viewing the game from a different set of statistics than we did when we were kids.
