Do the same with JJ Walker? Dy-no-mite! Really, though, not if the contract pays 80-90 cents on the stardom dollar.
These types of massive deals are only mutually beneficial when each side assumes a reasonable amount of risk. The recent signings I’ve seen were nearly all stupid from the club standpoint. The team in each case (other than the Cooper Pratt deal) was taking on darn near all of the risk.
Why do I care how much the uberwealthy Cardinal owners shell out? Because they work within a budget (a morbidly greedy budget at this point) and if they overpay for someone, it obviously limits their ability to invest elsewhere. Foolishly throw away 12 million bucks on Dustin May, and that’s money that can’t be used to improve the team in some other way. Thanks, Chaim!
No they should not. Players should earn what they get, teams should pay what the player is worth and has been worth to them.
I honestly believe we are seeing numerous long term deals to very young players because of the potential upcoming CBA ramifications. There could be a reduction in number of years to free agency and there could be a salary floor. Teams are trying to get prepared for both.
Of course there is a chance that neither rule is implemented but the owners seem to think they know what is going to happen.
The Pirates just bought out at least three free agent years, and possibly four depending on how the new CBA goes. They are betting that Griffin is a star player and salaries continue to rise, both of which are reasonable gambles. I’m not overly worried about the arb salaries but if they get three free agent years at $25M each on this deal, that could turn out to be a steal. Basically the Pirates (and other small market teams) almost have to taken these gambles to keep their window open a touch longer because if Griffin hit free agency at 25 with multiple 5+ WAR, MVP vote caliber seasons on his record, there’s no way they could afford the contract he’d get.
The Cards should take note…JJ probably doesn’t have the same ceiling, but the Cards could get themselves a couple extra years of a very good player at below market rate with an early deal. It’s probably more important if they find themselves with higher ceiling guys in the Doyle and Baez mold (or better) in upcoming drafts.
