I was trying to figure out which of last year’s rookies burned an option year and which didn’t. It looks like…
* Bader, Lucas, Sierra, and Valera spent more than 20 days in the minors, so each lost an option year.
* Brebbia and DeJong were never sent down after their call-ups, so they keep all three options years going into 2018.
* Not sure on Sosa and Wick, since they never made their MLB debuts. Does the options’ clock start when service time begins to accrue, or as soon as they go on the 40-Man Roster?

November 17, 2017 at 4:18 pm #37969Sosa and Wick were “optioned” to the minors in Spring training. So yes, they used an option.
November 17, 2017 at 6:28 pm #37975On DeJong, right answer but wrong assumption. He was sent back down for a time in June, but not long enough to use an option.
Sosa and Wick were no different than Valera. They all burned an option before April was over.
November 18, 2017 at 10:19 am #37989Thank you both. Sounds like clock starts when they hit the MLB roster, regardless of MLB service time.
So of the twelve guys who aren’t arbitration-eligible until 2021, bottom line is:
3 option years remaining: Alcántara, Brebbia, DeJong, Flaherty, Sherriff, and Voit.
2 option years remaining: Bader, Lucas, Sierra, Sosa, Valera, and Wick.
Have I got it?
November 18, 2017 at 10:38 am #37990Not sure on Voit. After being added to the ML roster he was sent down. If it was more than 20 days, he used an option.
November 18, 2017 at 2:48 pm #37995Brian’s handy roster matrix gives the story on Voit as this:
06/25: Voit Memphis to STL, added to 40-Man Roster.
08/21: Voit STL to Memphis.
08/27: Voit Memphis to STL.November 29, 2017 at 4:48 pm #38405PadsFS

What about Bowman, Reyes, Gant, and Tuivailala? They are definitely shuttle-worthy relievers that aren’t arb-eligible. Do they all have an option available? Tuivailala has spent parts of 4 seasons in the ML. If we add several relievers, Tuivailala would appear to be the odd man out for the opening day bullpen. Reyes and Gant are potentially AAA starters.
November 29, 2017 at 8:03 pm #38409Tuivailala is out of options.
Reyes was never optioned because he was injured and placed on the DL.November 29, 2017 at 8:38 pm #38411Bowman also has never been optioned
