He’s got a career WHIP of about 1.2 and career strikeout rate of almost 9.0. I guess he might be worth a shot on a one year deal. Sounds like a better signing than Van Helsing, or whoever the other guy is.
He had three good years in a row before last year, so must be they hope he can bounce back on the cheap. If he’s not good, he’s an easy cut anyway. That’s not much more than minimum salary now.
There have too many deals where the Cardinals have signed older players coming off a down season hoping they can come back. Problem is like in the signing of Miller he was out there when another better younger pitcher could have been getting innings. When Miller was good he was pretty good but when he was bad he was just awful and we lost too many games because of him. Same with Cecil except he was never very good and Holland.
Hope Wittgren is an exception.
I think it’s a better bet than the other guy we signed. His walk percentage is still good. If our defense stays solid,might be a decent pickup.

The Cardinals seem to have learned their lesson of signing expensive relievers only to see them flop. Going after the low hanging fruit worked last year with McFarland and Garcia so maybe it will again with Wittgren and VerHagen.
They need to let the younger up and coming players, who are trending in the right direction
get the chance. Woodford, Whitley, Rondon, Liberatore, Oviedo, Thompson.
Especially Woodford, who dominated the month of September last year, he is always under the
radar, but gets better every year.!Wow. are you kidding me. Zach McAllister, 34 years old, last pitched in the big
league in 2018, with a 6.20 era. what are we doing..????I’m interested to see what Woodford will do this spring. He has worked hard in the minors and improved himself as much as any pitcher that has come through the Cardinals
organization. He has developed pitches that he didn’t have when drafted and his control has improved significantly.We’ll see what those five Gold Gloves, plus the permanent Gold Glove of Yadier Molina, can do with these long shot relievers. All of the pitchers the front office brought into the organization last year pitched much better when with the Cardinals. It will be telling if Luis Garcia’s numbers drop while pitching for another organization.
