Scott Boras has spoken out against the new posting rules which enable the owners to pay far below market value for overseas players. The first example is Ohtani.
I know there has already been a lot of Ohtani discussion on the Rumors thread, but it may be easier for all to find by having the general (posting rules) or specific (Ohtani) talk here. Just a thought, not a mandate, though!
December 1, 2017 at 9:35 am #38465From Morosi:
Shohei Ohtani development: Multiple @MLB team execs believe Ohtani may actually prefer to sign with a club that doesn’t already have a Japanese star; Ohtani’s camp has not commented on that.
December 1, 2017 at 9:52 am #38472Well, that could be even better for the Cardinals if they woke up and went big on a Marlins deal – to possibly lure Ohtani without taking on Darvish would be ideal.
And then you could pitch them head-to-head against each other if Darvish signed with the Cubs.
Of course, if they come in to a club together as a package deal, then they are going to a club that doesn’t “already” have a Japanese star…

December 3, 2017 at 8:23 am #38615Ohtani is to meet with interested teams this week in Los Angeles. Cards are not mentioned, but the list is not definitive.

ParticipantHe told the Yankees he is not signing with them.
December 3, 2017 at 7:07 pm #38657The Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes are heating up. The #Yankees have been told they are out of the running, while #Mariners and #SFGiants are reportedly among the finalists: https://t.co/WIiLtoBZFj pic.twitter.com/Ei9SYYE57x

That would be rough if the Giants got both Stanton and Ohtani…
December 3, 2017 at 7:21 pm #38658I guess right now, I’m hoping he goes to either the Angels or Mariners

“Teams reportedly still in the mix include the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Los Angeles Angels.”
December 3, 2017 at 8:35 pm #38662Looks like the Padres are in the mix as well:

“#Mariners, #SFGiants and #Padres reported to be receiving a meeting with Shohei Ohtani.”
December 3, 2017 at 9:19 pm #38663Cardinals out, Cubs “possibly” still in

Still rooting for either the Angels or Mariners
December 3, 2017 at 11:01 pm #38672From Mark Feinsand, MLB.com:
Here’s what we seem to know Sunday night re: Ohtani based on sources/reports: Finalists include SF, SEA, SD, LAD, CHC, TEX Teams eliminated: OAK, TOR, ATL, MIL, STL, AZ, NYM, NYY, BOS, TB, PIT, MIN, CHW, WAS Unknown status: LAA, HOU, CIN, COL, CLE, MIA, BAL, DET, KC, PHI
December 4, 2017 at 8:06 am #38677The Angels do appear to still be in the market
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/mariners-giants-will-meet-with-shohei-ohtani-yankees-out-of-the-running.htmlThough if his preference is for a smaller market on the West Coast, that appears to favor Seattle & San Diego, with Seattle getting the nod due to the DH.
Seattle also has more of an Asian influence in terms of culture.
December 4, 2017 at 10:53 am #38687If he ends up going to the Cubs I am going to be sick. That would give them yet another superstar at basically the league minimum.
December 4, 2017 at 11:04 am #38692Yup that would be disgusting for him to end up with the Cubs, and from reports I have seen doesn’t look like Cards even tried hard to get him which I see as a stupid decision.
December 4, 2017 at 11:06 am #38694I agree. He has made it clear that money is not the issue.

ParticipantGoes to the Angels
December 8, 2017 at 2:26 pm #39012Was hoping he would go to the Mariners since we were not really in the running. Angels is okay though – anyone in the AL is fine. Makes sense to go to the AL anyway as DH would be a good way to utilize his bat. But then they would have to play an aging Pujols at first base.
December 8, 2017 at 3:28 pm #39014I’m just thrilled he didn’t pick the Cubs!! Sorry Cubbies you are going to have to spend some money like everyone else. Whew, we dodged a bullet there!
December 8, 2017 at 10:14 pm #39053By going to the Angels he made it clear that not only is money not an issue but neither is winning!
