Something to consider…Despite scoring only 269 runs this season, the Cardinals are at the .500 mark after having played 70 games. The only team in the NL that has scored less runs than he Cardinals are 25 games below the .500 mark. Everyone on here knows that I don’t at all care too much for the current Redbird manager. But in all fairness, I have to acknowledge that the little whiz-kid has his team in a much better position than I would have thought possible for a team that is so incredibly inept at placing runs up on the board. “I’ll tell you that!”…Haha!

I think it has to do with having a more respectable rotation than last year’s embarrassment but maybe Oli is slowly but surely learning some things.

Yeah gscottar, the 3 additions to the 5 man have all done better than I ever expected. And the Cardinal manager seems to not be as talkative as he was last season. It’s been my impression that if he just remains silent, that simple act in and of itself alone is worth 3 to 4 W’s a season…Haha!

My favorite Whiz Kids are Richie Ashburn, Curt Simmons, and Robin Roberts. Oh wait, wrong topic.

One thing you have to say for this season so far, is our W-L record is way above the “expected” record given our runs scored versus runs allowed numbers. Baseball Reference calls that “luck”, and we have the highest “luck” value of all 30 teams.

What is happening is our bullpen is getting the job done most of the time, and we are getting more clutch hits and outs than the opponent. Last night’s game was a perfect example. But you also have to give the manager some credit as he is making the right decisions more often than not.

Storm clouds are on the horizon, as we are not nearly as good of a team as our record shows. Can we play better, especially once we get Contreras and Noot are back, and possibly Edman later, and really put together a nice season? Or will reality set in and we pull back closer to our expected W-L record? Right now based on RS vs RA we should be 31-40 – ouch!

To me it is simply that Gray, Gibson, and Lynn are superior to what Monty, Waino, and Flaherty gave us last year. Solid starting pitching sets the tone for everything.

Pitching in general is better, but offense is worse compared to last year. Last year’s team scored 4.4 runs per game and gave up 5.1. This year we are at 3.9 and 4.4.

So yes, pitching is better, but it is offset by less run production. Thus the clutch, or “luck” factor is what falls out as the main difference right now when looking year over year.
