The Cardinals International program is the least productive souce of major league talent.
For the majority of Mo’s tenure as General Manager the Cardinals have pursued a quantity over quality approach. They also sign a number of older players who are not signed the year they become eligible. less than half began their professional careers at age 16 or 17.
The lack of results are stunning.
Only 23 players originally signed by the Cardinals have reached the major leagues. Only 6 have achieved a career WAR of 3.0 or more. None of them are currently on the Cardinals 40 man roster.
The six include Carlos Martinez (12.9), Edmundo Sosa (3.7), Aledmys Diaz (7.6), Randy Arozarena (11.2), Adolis Garcia (10.6) and Sandy Alcantara (19.6). Total accumulated WAR with the Cardinals by the 23 players is 21.2 vs 53 accumulate with other teams. Once again Mo has given up the best talent.
There are no Cardinals on the MLB top 100 prospects. Have been none for a number of years. 21 of the MLB top 100 prospects are international players. 14 originally signed for over 1 million dollars, 7 for over 2 milliion.
There are no international players originally signed by the Cardinals on the major league roster.
Only one on the Memphis roster. Herrera, Cardinals top 50 rank #4.
Two, Roy Garcia and Pereira at Springfield. Neither in the Cardinals top 50
Forteen at Peoria. Nunez (#25 on Cardinal top 50), Paniagua (27), D. Rodroguez (38) and Rivas (40) only ranked players.
I have previously mentioned Lane Thomas, who produced 3.4 WAR for WSN this year, the same as Goldschmidt has produced for us, and around 6.5 WAR for them in two plus years. Back in 2017 the Cardinals sent International Bonus Pool money to the BJs in trade for Thomas. That would have been a nice return for the Int pool money, but Mo blew that like he did those Int star calibre guys you mentioned.
Yes, just eyeballing it, the Cardinals international program has to be one of the worst in the majors. I would guess the only one that had worse results over that time frame would be the Orioles, who used to trade away all their international bonus pool allocation.
What is shocking is that the Cardinals are now tied for the largest bonus pool with nine other teams, and they haven’t pivoted to take advantage of it. The last two years, they have traded away international bonus pool money. They also have not been players for any international prospect players ranked in the top 10-15 (I believe last year, they signed a couple towards the back half of the Top 30).
Couldn’t agree more with the tenor of this thread! The Cards are one of the best at producing WAR from the domestic draft. Why can’t that translate, at all, to the international side? They consolidated their DSL trams from two to one, presumably so that DeWitt could save (make) more money. Despite all of thier Latin American talent on one team, which should theoretically produce a strong team, as opposed to DSL rosters split between two teams, thier DSL team was an unmitigated disaster!! The complex league team, comprised of primarily the “cream of the crop” from prior DSL talent, was equally terrible. Why? Teams like the Dodgers Yankees& other teams who pick historically late on the domestic draft-missing out on the high-end talent, augment thier roster with Latin American players.
While Mo focuses on the MLB team & revamping the organizational pitching methodology this off season, a complete gutting of thier Latin American scouting & development staff needs to happen as well! No excuse about draft position or budgetary puke points to fall back on…
