Two new articles are up. One with the basics is for everyone, with my analysis for subscribers.
New free article at The Cardinal Nation. #stlcards 2025 Minor League Camp, the first under new leadership including Chaim Bloom and Rob Cerfolio, opened on Thursday, February 27 with 134 players. https://t.co/sbyixTz17e pic.twitter.com/IL1RXloOeO

And for those who want to go deeper on the #stlcards Minor League Camp roster – who came from where, how the hitters are initially assigned and more, check out this subscriber article. https://t.co/zzPWiIcZwJ pic.twitter.com/1QXNr1JEJU

March 12, 2025 at 8:13 pm #277547I don’t know why they scheduled this game for noon on a Friday as not many people can watch that. I’ll try to catch the recording afterwards. It will be interesting to see if they start Padilla or Wetherholt at SS since there has been so much hype internally about Padilla, while Wetherholt we almost certainly know won’t actually be starting at SS long term for the Cards due to Winn.
March 12, 2025 at 8:30 pm #277550Wetherholt 100%. The hype about Padilla has been strongly external, in my view.
March 12, 2025 at 8:38 pm #277552Ah interesting thanks for clarifying. I remember you had a quote from some Cardinals staff really excited about Padilla. It makes sense for Wetherholt to start at SS since he is the #1 prospect in the system. Part of me just wants to see some signs even if just a few innings of the org giving him time at 3B or 2B to see what they view as his long term position. At some point he really needs to start playing the position he would if he makes it to STL.
March 12, 2025 at 9:43 pm #277555The way I see it is give Wetherholt reps at SS. It’s good that he learns to play the position. That way he can back up Winn in case of injury someday. Otherwise, give him reps at 2B too. The positions rely mostly on the same skill set so it’s not like converting him back to 2B is difficult (we aren’t talking moving Walker to the outfield here). Yes, Wetherholt is likely a future 2B-man or 3B-man. But if Winn were to get seriously injured, there is no one else in the system with MLB-caliber skills to back him up. Let that be JJ.
I did agree with Brian and Kyle that Wetherholt didn’t necessarily need to be getting SS reps anymore at MLB camp, but that is now rectified.
