It’s being reported that Mike Shannon has died. The team apparently announced it this morning.

He was great to speak with. Spent time watching horse racing with him a couple times. He was a great Cardinal!
Sad day for the Cardinals and all of baseball. I thought about Mike just this past Friday night when as a result of the Apple broadcast I listened in on the game via KMOX. I enjoyed the change of pace associated with following the game on the radio, but it somehow seemed so different without Mike’s voice calling the action down on the field. He’ll still be watching.
Mike was one of my baseball heroes. In the early 70s I had gone downtown with my mom so she could do Christmas shopping at the Famous-Barr store. We popped into a cafeteria type place in or around the F-B building and sat at the counter. It turned out Mike Shannon was sitting on the next stool eating a piece of pie. A news report about the Apollo mission on the moon just then was on a TV behind the counter and we talked about that until he finished his pie and went on his way. Must have been shortly after he retired because I said I hoped he would like talking on the radio, and he said he hoped so too.
A true Cardinal and St. Louis community legend. RIP Mike. Thanks for all the great memories both on the field and in the booth.
My Mike Shannon story occured when he autographed my scorecard when I was a young boy of about 8 or 9 and he was still playing. During BP and pregame drills, he approached the area around the 1B side of the field boxes where myself and several other young fans were gathered in hopes of snagging some of our heroe’s signatures. I hollered out, “Hey, can I have your autograph?” He glanced and walked over to where I was standing and said, “Yeah, but next time say, may I please have your autograph. You’ll get more of ’em that way”…I’ve always imagined that during that game he might have had a casual conversation with one of his fellow Cardinal teammates in which he said, “I had to straighten that kid out on his manners”…
I just saw the headline of this on a yahoo site. Sad to see. I know as he got older, he got a little incoherent I guess is the right word at times. But I loved him. Basically grew up listening to him on the radio. To me he was as much cardinal baseball as anyone. He was a true fan. I will miss him. May he rest in peace.
So sad that he passed, but what a great Cardinal legacy he left both on the field and in the booth. He’ll be missed by Cardinals fans everywhere.
Very sad day indeed. Like many people, I grew up listening to Mike and Jack every night. What a great voice and what great stories he could tell. A true legend. RIP Mike.
Wow, another Cardinal legend passes. In a matter of a couple of months we have lost three prominent members of the ‘64 Champions, Tim McCarver, Dick Groat, and now Mike Shannon.
I was watching a home game just a couple of weeks ago and they showed Mike at the game.
So many memories. The first I heard of him was my dad telling me that Harry Caray said on the broadcast that this kid Shannon has the best arm of any prospect to come along in a long time.
With Lou Brock, he stabilized the outfield in ‘64 as we caught fire in August and September.
Then the long career calling games with Jack Buck, and later as the lead guy. His Friday nights at Shannon’s shows were legendary.
One of the best athletes the St. Louis area has produced, and they have have a lot of good ones.
I never will forget this.
In my initial 1968 Strat-O-Matic St. Louis Replay it went to Game 7 against Detroit. Mike Shannon hit a two run homer in the 1st to put us up 3-0. Gibson took it from there. Every time I think of Mike Shannon I always think of that homerun he hit for me to help us win the World Series.

RIP, Mike. I still enjoyed listening to him on the radio when I could right up to his last year. Condolences to his family and loved ones.
I remember thinking we still had a chance when Shannon hit the HR off Lolich in the 9th of Game 7. RIP.

What a life to live. Well done Mike, may you RIP.
He always struck me as a neighbor. He could easily have been the guy 3 farms east of your place.
