#STLCards maintaining interest in free agent Michael Brantley, source confirms, even as they’re open to a more expensive outfielder (read: Bryce Harper), per comments by Bill DeWitt III to @dgoold. @MLB @MLBNetwork

November 21, 2018 at 9:46 am #74770I view Brantley as kind of a high risk/high reward player, similar to Donaldson. If they are healthy they can put up big numbers for you but there is always the risk of an extended stay on the DL.
The interesting part of this is that to show interest in a RF means they must be entertaining the idea of trying to move Fowler. I can’t imagine they are going to pay him $16.5M next season to pinch hit.
November 21, 2018 at 10:03 am #74780Goold offers his take.
A note on Brantley: multiple sources have told me how it would a take a series of moves to find a fit for Brantley with the #stlcards. In other words, they would need to miss on other targets and trade/shuffle players (Fowler?) before and after engaging in pursuit of All-Star OF. https://t.co/O4pwHFNPfc

November 21, 2018 at 10:08 am #74781I’m all for this if it means we are getting rid of Fowler.
Trade Fowler as part of a Greinke package, or trade him for Carlos Santana.
Then sign Brantley for RF.
Though, I think I would rather see the Cardinals trade Adolis Garcia to Tampa for Joe McCarthy.
November 21, 2018 at 10:32 am #74788Not landing Harper i think leads straight to a Donaldson (branded as the MOTB) and Brantley (lefty RFer) set of signings…
which i am not a fan of
also..why would Cleveland trade Santan for Fowler? The contract is longer, but at least he is producing, Fowler offers little production hope back for anyone
I think i could see a Santana to DBacks for Greinke type of deal happening if they move Goldy to someone else like Houston or us maybe…Phils need solid pitching to compete right now and swapping Santana’s production and contract for Greinke might be a swap the DBacks are willing to take
I dunno..
Brantley feels like the Leake and Fowler signings…except LEake and Fowler never were hurt like Brantley was…
if we can get Donaldson and Brantley on 2yr deals… Maybe…but both will want a lot of money for probably longer and will probably find someone to pay it
id rather trade assets to get a bat we swing and miss on Harper (even if it is a lot of good assets)…then use the money to sign Kikuchi and some weapons for the bullpen
November 21, 2018 at 10:36 am #74790why would Cleveland trade Santan for Fowler?
Cleveland wouldn’t. He plays for the Phillies. The Phillies are trying to move Carlos Santana so they can move Rhys Hoskins back to 1B (because he was a nightmare in LF).
One could argue, if Fowler can play defense anywhere, it would be in the third smallest ballpark (actually, might be tied for second smallest with Wrigley).
November 21, 2018 at 11:20 am #74793ugh no thanks he is always ALWAYS injured
November 21, 2018 at 11:30 am #74794I don’t view Carlos Santana as a big upgrade over anyone especially with his onerous contract. If we are going to force Carp back to 3B then let’s trade for an elite player at 1B (Goldschmidt).
November 21, 2018 at 11:54 am #74797especially with his onerous contract.
There are two years and $41 million left. $500,000 buyout on 2021. How is that onerous relative to Fowler’s three years and $48.5 million?
November 21, 2018 at 12:30 pm #74799The thought of the Cardinals trading for Brantley makes me throw up in my mouth.
November 21, 2018 at 1:05 pm #74802You can save the barf. Brantley is a free agent, not a trade target.

If the Phillies would do a one for one swap of Santana for Fowler I might consider it but I have no idea why the Phillies would do that. Regardless, my previous point was if we are going to move Carp to 3B, where he can be a liability, let’s do it because we have acquired an elite player for 1B (Goldschmidt), instead of an overpriced albatross (Santana).
November 21, 2018 at 4:21 pm #74816Why do posters think Brantley is injury prone? Here is the number of PAs for Brantley for the last 6 years:
2012 – 609
2013 – 611
2014 – 676
2015 – 596
2016 – 43
2017 – 375
2018 – 631He had shoulder surgery that effectively wiped out his 2016 and a severe ankle injury in 2017. Other than that, he has played almost every game.

I would rather have Goldschmidt than Santana, yes.
I believe the only way we trade for Goldschmidt is as part of a Greinke deal, and I don’t think the front office and ownership have that vision or fortitude, based on what I have seen of them the last three years.
Thus, I am looking for other bad contracts that we can trade Fowler for…
I don’t think a two year/$41 million contract is an albatross in the place of a 3 year/$48.5 million contract. It is lower overall value and gets a bad player off the team sooner, freeing up roster space to protect prospects, if nothing else.
I look at it this way, getting rid of Fowler is the single biggest improvement the Cardinals can make this offseason. They have 2 ways of doing that:
1. Release him and eat $48.5 million. Nobody believes they will act like the Red Sox or Dodgers and swallow their pride.
2. Trade him for a much bigger contract or one that is a different area of need.November 22, 2018 at 3:03 pm #74866Do the people in the trade Fowler camp truly think he will waive his no trade clause?
November 22, 2018 at 4:19 pm #74870Do the people in the trade Fowler camp truly think he will waive his no trade clause?
To Arizona, yes.
To Philadelphia or New York, no.
Why?
1. The media in each of the respective markets. If Fowler is miserable in St. Louis, imagine Philadelphia or New York
2. No state income taxes in Arizona
3. Arizona is closer to his home in Vegas
4. He gets to have spring training near his buddies on the CubsNovember 23, 2018 at 12:39 pm #74896Why would the Phillies trade Santana for Fowler? How does that improve their situation?
November 23, 2018 at 2:13 pm #74907Why would the Phillies trade Santana for Fowler? How does that improve their situation?
The reason they are trying to trade Santana is to move Rhys Hoskins back to 1B.
They would have to be betting on Fowler playing left field better than Hoskins does. Both Wrigley Field and where the Phillies play are about the same size, as the second and third smallest ballparks, respectively. If Fowler can play defense anywhere, it would be in a small ballpark.
November 23, 2018 at 2:49 pm #74914I know they want Hoskins at 1B but there are probably at least a dozen better trade options out there than Fowler.
November 23, 2018 at 2:54 pm #74915Last I checked, there isn’t much of a market for $20 million first basemen these days.
I mean, CJ Cron got released because he was projected to make $5 million this year. Of course, that was by one of the teams that receives $40+ million in revenue sharing per year even though they are in a larger metropolitan area and larger TV market than STL.
