There are a lot of players over the age of 30 that now face either taking a minor league deal or going home. Whether it is a depressed market, collusion, valuation changes, player/agent naivety, whatever you want to call it, etc…. the reality is that the free agent market is rapidly changing.
If I was a veteran player I would either try to re-sign with my current team or try to sign the best deal I could find in November or December. Waiting until this late won’t work unless you are a superstar. A guy like Andrew McCutcheon was wise to take his money early in the offseason and not mess around.
March 1, 2019 at 9:20 am #83103If you're wondering why Matt Wieters chose to sign with the #stlcards: They were the only team to make him an offer. It came on Feb. 25.

March 1, 2019 at 9:25 am #83104Free agents say they haven't received offers and then they do. What changed? My simple theory: Their asking price dropped to the market's perception of their current (not prior) value.

March 1, 2019 at 10:08 am #83106I wish there was good data year to year about how many players aren’t signed. Is it really more than normal. Who knows? I dont follow other teams that closely but I dont see us plugging in a lot of guys who haven’t played in the major leagues. Who is filling all these spots? Free agents aren’t the only ones the union represents.
March 1, 2019 at 11:52 am #83107I would be interested in seeing that data, too. I have a feeling that the number of players not signed hasn’t changed that much. I still think that the controversy about unsigned free agents was generated by Boras and his shills in the media. Now that the big names are signed, we aren’t hearing about how the players are being treated so unfairly anymore.

Francisco Pena will miss 10 to 15 days with possible oblique injury. #cardinals

March 5, 2019 at 4:14 pm #83332What do you think the chances are Pena doesn’t opt out and goes to Memphis to back-up Knizner? If Yadi or Wieters go down he’d probably be the next catcher up.
March 5, 2019 at 4:20 pm #83335If Pena is smart, he will go to Memphis. He isn’t going to find a better situation anywhere else. My guess is that he will do it. I don’t base that on any inside info, but on the fact that he has bounced around a lot (and did not go elsewhere this winter), so perhaps he has a more realistic view of his options. Late in camps, a number of catchers are often cut loose, making the hill to find a new home even taller. Finding an MLB job late in camps/early in the season is going to be almost impossible.
The Cards have Joe Hudson ready even if Pena leaves.
