Matt Wieters will be signing back with #STLCards. 2M plus 1M incentives.January 19, 2020 at 11:53 am #120051Any idea what the incentives are? Makes me think that if Yadi is injured Wieters is going to get the opportunity to start instead of Knizner which would be stupid imo.
January 19, 2020 at 11:56 am #120052Knizner will be moving to Denver, and if not there, then to Cleveland for Hand.
January 19, 2020 at 12:02 pm #120053The Cardinals are not trading for Arenado and Hand hasn’t even been rumored.

jj-cf-stlParticipantWith the new 26 man roster, carrying all three catchers is a possibility. Just depends on the workload the FO wants Knizner to maintain. Glad to have Wieters back.
January 19, 2020 at 12:09 pm #120055and Hand hasn’t even been rumored.
Most Cardinals trades aren’t rumored before they happen.
I think next on the priority list for the Cardinals is finding a trade partner for Dexter Fowler (hello, Arizona).
January 19, 2020 at 12:23 pm #120056There were rumors that Hand was trade bait last summer before the trade deadline, and Goold mentioned that the Cardinals might want to add another bullpen piece. Many believe we still need a lock down closer. But, yes, there is no current rumor regarding Hand and the Cardinals. It’s more like a ‘trade idea’. We don’t even know how healthy Hand is. All anybody can say about a potential Arenado trade is that there is a lot of smoke here, and other places.
January 19, 2020 at 1:10 pm #120059Getting Hand would be a dream come true for me but alas I haven’t heard anything linking the Cardinals to him nor have I heard anything suggesting the Indians are looking to move him.
I would have preferred the Cardinals not to bring Wieters back but in reality it really doesn’t matter until Yadi retires, assuming that he actually does someday.
January 19, 2020 at 1:53 pm #120062Because we are in a “win now” mode, I like bringing Weiters back. Solid lefty bat (switcher) that balances well with Molina.
If we were in more of a rebuild phase, I would say to pass on Matt and play Knizner twice a week, and everyday if Yadi goes down for awhile. But from the looks of things today, I want the veteran.
January 19, 2020 at 1:55 pm #120064January 19, 2020 at 4:59 pm #120067Kninzer is too good to waste behind Yadi, but we can still benefit from his development by trading him. He carries value by merely existing and quieting Yadi extension talks.
There are many ways him to provide value without playing.January 19, 2020 at 8:04 pm #120108Excellent signing by the Cardinals.
January 20, 2020 at 8:52 am #120126Given the choice I prefer youth and athleticism over aging veterans but like I said it doesn’t matter much with backup C on our team, plus Wieters is cheap. He isn’t going to hurt our budget like some of the other veterans we have.
January 20, 2020 at 7:05 pm #120189before you write off Molina because he’s 37 years old, remember that Carlton Fisk had 37 HR’s and 107 RBI’s at age 37 and went on to hit 105 HR’s and 391 RBI’s over his next 6 seasons. Pretty decent catcher too.
January 20, 2020 at 7:41 pm #120195Yadi can stay until he is 50 for all I care but not at $20M a pop. He should be willing to do the Waino deal after 2020.
January 20, 2020 at 8:26 pm #120199I asked Yadi specifically if there was any deadline, like spring. He said no.

Participantwell its a fine move. wieters is a decent hitter and backup. its a typical safe cardinal move . I don’t think he makes a difference on our record though.
January 21, 2020 at 9:20 am #120246I think Wieters does make a difference on the team’s record. He is better than a back-up catcher. The pitching staff’s ERA was lower with Wieters behind the plate last year than with Yadi. He is still a dangerous hitter and he threw out a bunch of would-be base stealers last year. I like the move. Let Knizner catch everyday at Memphis and continue to work on his game and stay sharp. He can ride the Memphis shuttle and get some ML exposure, too.
