With Matsui off the board, I wonder if the Cardinals have in interest in former division rival Josh Hader?
I’ve never seen Matsui throw a solitary pitch and know nothing about him, but if he’s any good at all it seems to me like SD made a pretty good deal. I guess we’ll find out.
The money per year is not to bad, but 5 years I wouldn’t be all that thrilled with…but that might be my bias fearing another Bret Cecil implosion
Yeah, the 5 years is too long to suffer through a bad marriage, but best I can tell the union can be dissolved after 3 years.
Seems like a better deal than quite a few were thinking. Maybe there was some per pound of body weight analysis done in the valuation after all. Wonder how hard BillyMo tried?

The AAV is something BillyMo could easily have done. It suggests to me that either Matsui wasn’t interested in St. Louis, or St. Louis wasn’t interested in Matsui. If the latter is the case, it suggests that BillyMo is looking to the trade market rather than the FA market for any pen help.
Another Asian player signs with a west coast team. When Ichiro signed with SEA it made perfect geographical sense to me, and I guess it does for those players today too.
Perhaps geography helps a bit, but I’ve seen no reports yet that any non-West Coast teams offered better terms and the free agents took fewer years/less money just to be on the left coast. It always seems to be about the money…
For example, the Yankees reportedly bowed out on Yamamoto at $300 million and he got another $25 million from the Dodger$. The Mets offered similar money, but LA gave him a second buyout that he supposedly wanted and $50 million cash up front.
It helped us a bit this offseason with Gibson and Gray both wanting to play here, geographically. I don’t know if either had better offers, but closer to home seems to matter, especially if crossing the Pacific is locked in as a given.
I am not attempting to be contrary, jj, but every player says he wants to be with his new team, so it is hard for me to sort out talk from reality. Comparing $ offers is usually better, or at least as accurate as the reports are.
Though I will say that the two you mention signed early. At least in the case of Gray, there was more demand so he could maybe could have gotten more by waiting. I am not sure if Gibson’s (or Lynn’s) market was particularly robust. I’m guessing when they got offers over $10 MM, they jumped.
