Some are speculating that Mike Matheny is going to be the next manager of the San Francisco Giants. Anybody heard any rumblings, got any scoop?
It almost seems like a logical choice to me.

I know what POTUS and SCOTUS are. But what’s a Wotus?
I like Showalter a lot as a manager — and as a 15-1 value bet. But I would think the Giants are veering toward a youth movement very soon, and I don’t know which manager is the best fit for that philosophy. Matheny’s St. Louis tenure was excellent for developing young starting pitchers, but Mabry undermined all of the Cardinal kid hitters and Matheny might want to bring him along as batting coach.
If I’m Frisco I’d prefer Matheny to Matt Williams for sure, or any first-time managers. Not sure about Girardi. But re Matheny, I’d insist on no Mabry (except in a benign bench coach role) or no deal.
I wonder what the Card’s list will look like for ’20.
Brian Kenny as a manager? He should be like a million to one. San Francisco sounds like a good landing spot for MM.
I think Showalter is the best on that list, and he would be my choice if I had any say in the matter. Williams has Giants connections of course, and had a great year in his first year at Washington.
If the Giants brass has a good memory, they should think back to the 2012 post season series when Bochy schooled Matheny on how to manipulate the game in the late innings. Matheny was a buffoon in that series, basically (to use some chess terminology) giving away his queen and a couple of knights, while Bochy was pretty much handed the series check mate.
But that was then – maybe Matheny has learned a thing or two. He did seem to get better over his Cardinal tenure. My sense about Mike though, is he is a bit too rigid and thinks he never makes a mistake. It is hard to play under that type of leader, as it creates a tenseness around the club and your natural abilities are dampened to some degree.
I have always thought Matheny would be best suited as a pitching coach extraordinaire, and not manning the top step of the dugout. He could be the next Dave Duncan in that capacity. Yadi is going to be one whale of a pitching coach too. And just imagine Bader with another 20 years of maturity under his belt…… there’s your future great manager.

Lacadaisical spring training, poor defense, poor baserunning, overuse of certain relievers, disharmony in the clubhouse….
I wouldn’t wish that on anybody, particularly the Kansas City Royals.
Regardless, if Matheny gets the job, I hope he does well and leads the Royals into contention.
