There were rumors yesterday that a deal was close. Should the Cards have topped this offer?
Free-agent reliever Luis Garcia and the San Diego Padres are in agreement on a two-year, $7 million deal, according to a source familiar with the situation.
I would have liked him for that, but in the world of bullpen volatility, the risk is too great when it seems that viable arms like Hicks, Reyes, and others may not have rotation spots.
They have enough room to make an impact move, but $3.5 for Garcia…$.7 for Rondon…$4 for Joe Kelly or who ever and suddenly you come up short in the bidding for the player who might actually add wins.
No to that deal. He hasn’t shown the ability to have 2 consecutive seasons that he can be relied upon. I wish we could have talked Melancon into the deal he accepted with the D-backs but I understand that being close to Arizona was big for him.
I liked what Garcia gave us and would have preferred to bring him back. But sometimes these guys are good one year and not so much the next. Fairly small risk to being him back for two years, but then these guys are mostly commodities that can be switched around. You just hope it does not take half a season to find the right guys.
