Thought we’d have a thread to discuss local media personalities covering the Cardinals.
At the P-D, BenFred is leaving, with Lynn Worthy moving from the Cardinals beat to BenFred’s columnist job. Looks like they are scaling back minor league coverage with Daniel Guerrero moving off that (mostly) to replace Worthy as Derrick Goold’s second man on team coverage.
First, I congratulated Ben Fred and told him I'm happy for him and his family that he found something that's going to make him happy.
But I also told him we might have to scrap because he was leaving us. On top of that, he's leaving me shoes to fill. Man … 🥊😢♥️ https://t.co/grh18YbPfc

A slight programming note for me: I'm excited to be moving onto the Cardinals beat at the Post-Dispatch! I've enjoyed the opportunity to cover the Cardinals farm for the P-D. There will still be some occasional prospect coverage from me but expect more big-league content.

December 20, 2024 at 12:18 pm #273554Glad to know they all think each other is fantastic. I don’t financially support the P-D so I don’t get the sports coverage. I think we used to have a thread on the shrinking demand for sports writers and I imagine that extends to local sports media to some extent. It probably relates to the competitive pressure all legacy media is facing now days. I wish them all well.
December 20, 2024 at 2:24 pm #273567BenFred seemed like a decent writer. I read most of his stuff and watched some of his podcasts. I always got the impression that he was exasperated that the Cardinal front office and ownership was so risk averse and conservative. Maybe he finally snapped.
December 21, 2024 at 8:00 pm #273668“Thankful for a new chapter at @BJC_HealthCare” ??? From a columnist for the Post Dispatch to that?
Okay, I’ll be that guy. BenFred was the ONLY guy at the PD who would push back on the Cardinals. Strange to say the least.
Good luck sir, you will be missed.

March 24, 2025 at 12:52 pm #277928Join us in congratulating our very own Bob Carpenter on announcing his final season as the Nationals' lead play-by-play TV announcer!
Bob will step down after this season, marking his 42nd year as an MLB broadcaster. https://t.co/eSHtG1IA3s pic.twitter.com/f8ZEACjE7e

March 24, 2025 at 1:58 pm #277931I always liked Bob Carpenter. The “see you later” call got a little old but otherwise I thought he had a smooth voice and a good flow of the game.

cardsfan64ParticipantJohn Denton let go from MLB!
The media business is a tough one, but journalists still sign up for it everyday.
Today is a rough one as I — and a few other colleagues — were informed by MLB that we were being laid off, effective immediately. The timing is tough with Spring Training a few days away. (1/2)

February 4, 2026 at 3:44 pm #300326So, are they going younger and cheaper, or will the Cardinals not have an MLB.com beat writer? Or will beat writers cover multiple teams?
February 4, 2026 at 4:48 pm #300333Probably the latter bling. They are probably going to consolidate instead of having 30 beat writers.
I noticed that when Katie Woo of The Athletic left to cover the Dodgers she has not been replaced in STL. In fact she appears to be doing double duty as I have seen her do both Dodgers and Cardinals stories in the last couple of weeks.
