There is obvious hesitance on the Cardinals’ side because of the dip in production you describe and the natural tension this creates — Cardinals’ interest would be in making for a trade that could pay off but doesn’t cost much, and the M’s are going to argue they should get return as if Seager is for sure going to bounce back. The Cardinals cannot move away from any of the upper-tier possibilities for corner infield, especially via trade when there is also control.”
Saeger’s dip in production could also be tied to the fact that he was injured in June and never fully recoveed. Just sayin’.
That doesn’t explain his dip in production in 2017. Kyle Seager is not the upgrade the Cardinals need.
I have become obsessed with the idea of acquiring Seager and Haniger in a package deal. J.Martinez, Gyrko, two or three of Gant/Hudson/Weaver/Wacha/Helsley with Seattle sending $15 million to pay down Seager’s contract. (This corresponds to what I’ve read that Seattle would do in terms of taking back salary and paying down Seager’s contract). Would be little salary taken on this year so there would still be $ for other moves.
Is Seager really an upgrade over Gyorko?
No, but I’d do the deal to get Heniger. A cost controlled (4 more years) 6+ WAR bat. Other than Pham, how often do.you get a chance to acquire one of those.
I think we may be barking up the wrong tree here…..I might just let the dog briefly lift his leg and then move on down the road. How about a deal with our arch rivals? We have what they covet….starting pitching. And they have what we so desperately need…..relief pitching, hitting, defense, quality base runners and sound fundamental players.

I would include Montero if they would take back Fowler instead of Gyrko.
Also would add Gomber and Poncedeleon to pitchers to choose from list.
1. The Phillies trade shows they are willing to be cost neutral (that would imply send Fowler back)
2. In both the Phillies and Mets trades they included decent relievers (might be a stretch for Pazos, but he was decent last year) to get the deal done.Let’s face it, the Cardinals are nowhere near their spending limit, which is basically the luxury tax line.
They could acquire Seager and keep Fowler and Gyorko and be fine financially (if that meant getting Haniger back). But the only way this front office will trade for Seager is if they get rid of Fowler. Personally, I’d like to keep Gyorko as backup for Seager, but I can see them sending out Gyorko to make the revenues match.
No way the Cardinals pay the freight as if Seager is going to for sure bounce back. It really depends on how much value they see in getting rid of Fowler.
