Every team needs the roster flexibility to have several pitchers ready to ride the Triple-A shuttle. Wouldn’t it be great if the Cards’ biggest worry was the last reliever or two on the roster?
Kitt was in 74 games last year with an ERA of 2.80 and WHIP of 1.132. That’s 46% of the games. Please tell me who’s going to replace that production.
It won’t be one person. And it doesn’t need to be. He will be replaced by an aggregate of relievers. I get that is not ideal. But the team is letting the youth play. They may still sign someone. I just think it’s unlikely they get someone of Kittredge’s caliber.
Even if we bring in another RP and another OF, I don’t think either Roycroft or Leahy will be the ones kicked off the 40 man. I think that honor instead belongs to offseason waiver claims Roddery Munoz who was absolutely horrendous in Miami this year or Bailey Horn. Horn would have a career year if he even got his walk rate under 10%.
I’m also not sure why you think Leahy and Roycroft were so horrible. They are not world class RP, but they are low leverage guys who very importantly still have options. Bullpen options are very valuable as you can shuttle in fresh arms. If you have a bullpen of guys, but none with options (or just 1), then your pen isn’t going to be as good as one with options that can bring in fresh arms.
Zach Thompson should also be ecstatic he got an extra option year awarded as otherwise he would be done in the org. Both him and Leahy have 1 option year left, and if neither proves to be deserving of a consistent middle RP role, neither will be in the org in 26.
I could see value in the team bringing in one veteran RP after hearing the player’s thoughts on Kittredge’s role. The vet RP can come in and help provide guidance for young arms and hopefully provide some valuable innings at the top half of the bullpen. If we are out of it at the deadline, then we can trade them and get a 35+ or 40 future value type prospect depending on how the RP is doing.

Ignore Yates as he is in the finalization stage of a deal with the Dodgers.Kenley Jansen or Carlos Estevez would be the best options, but also probably the most expensive. Next tier down we could reunite with some former players like Joe Kelly, Adam Ottavino, or John Brebbia.
Kittredge was paid $2,630,000 last season on a one year contract. Hope our major league and minor league scouts can unearth another Kitt type for 2025.
Youth is a broad term. Can we plz use something besides age discrimination to define youth?
Farmhands and 0-3 service year players? That’s youth without an arb salary, that’s due to be traded soon.
When a player stays in college for a 4th year and is paid less to sign because of it, is that age discrimination? When a player seeking a long term contract who is 32 years of age is viewed differently than a 28 year old player seeking the same thing, is that age discrimination?

It is indeed age discrimination. Just not illegal age discrimination. You have to be 40 to be protected from illegal age discrimination.

Well lets stay with “youth” and the players.
The current pen graduates Helsley this season, JoJo the next. It’s currently not littered with contracts that can’t be optioned down. Two seasons of developing relievers who can be auditioned, and optioned in or out is a best case during the reset.
Last offseason we rented pitching to avoid promoting. Do we need to rent again? Where’s your laundry list of hopefuls Cranny? It fits this season 😀

You probably are right as he most likely would like to have a choice of swapping orgs. Without options, I wonder if he would stick with a team or just be one of those guys that is passed around waivers multiple times a season.
I’m not a scout, JJ. And I don’t have time to look up the stats of every free agent bullpen pitcher still on the market.
It’s an oversight not to include Munoz, Gomez, Santos, and Graceffo into the equation this spring. After camp the shuttle riders will be revealed.
I liked what I saw from Leahy for the most part in 2024. He usually came in for lower leverage situations, and kept things from getting out of hand.
Roycroft is one of those guys with an explosive fastball, which gives him a little more time to audition as he has the potential to dominate, ala Jason Motte. His problem is lack of consistency in the strike zone.
I have no issue with either guy being on the 40-man, but they will need to be successful to stay.
If Nado’s salary is vanquished I think Kyle Finnegan would make one heck of a setup guy for Helsley. At least until the trade deadline.

Nobody this season. One of the goals for this year is to figure out who will replace that production next year.
