We haven’t had discussion about Wong in recent months. I like his chances to bat second this year. What is your take on the second baseman?

Other than Flaherty I think Wong was the best player on the team in 2019 and I expect that to continue in 2020. Picking up his option for 2021 should be a no-brainer then I would offer him the QO in 2022. I am still reluctant about long term extensions. They usually don’t work out for the Cardinals. We don’t have to be in a hurry to lock up Wong.

I am encouraged by Wong’s play last year…but he has a tendency to be hot and cold, the only thing consistently hot is his glove which makes him worth being out there

but if the team is DEPENDING on his offense to carry the team that is a bad plan

Guys like him used to be the extra OOMPH a team had for the offense….Descalso, Skip, Miles, Eckstein, Furcal, maybe even Renteria a little at times and definitely Ozzie….probably others i am not placing right now…

Guys whose main job was to be amazing on defense and then help out a bit on offense

Bader, Wong, Yadi…all are those types and we love them…. but the problem is we have nothign else around them and are dependent on their offense

I would love to not have to worry about Wong’s offensive output, because it was not NEEDED

If a pretty inconsistent hitter in Wong, an upstart less than 1yr success utility man in Edman are your most dependable hitters you have a problem that needs fixing…not hope for fixing itself

Having said that…Wong looked good at times on offense and defense…id love that kind of production and consistency from one player….and if he DOES do that…then i don’t see why we dont extend him…2yrs of consistency with a platinum glove candidate is worth an extension id have to think…. we gave DeJong one for 1yr of play and Goldschmidt one without seeing him play an inning in a Cards uniform

I have always liked Wong, since the day the club drafted him. He had the tools to be an excellent player at a key defensive position, and has grown into the role quite well.

I pegged him as our future lead-off hitter a few years back, but batting second is probably more appropriate at this point. His tenure on the club now puts him in a leadership position. He should build on last year and continue to be one of the best players on the team. Him and DeJong could end up being one of the best keystone combo’s the organization has ever had.

Who’s the leadoff guy? You normally want your #2 hitter to have a little more pop. The issue is that unless Carp bounces back or Edman stays strong, you don’t really have any good options for #1/2 unless Carlson comes up.

That said, Wong has been a good player the last few years and I hope he can maintain his peak. Mo might be working on an extension now. Ha

As “inconsistent” as he might be with the bat, he was easily one of the best 2 or 3 in the lineup last year. That’s a sad, but true statement.

Who the top 3 or 4 with the bat will be this year is anyones guess, I’d go with Goldy, Wong and Thomas?

Unless Wong falls off a cliff, the option will undoubtedly be picked up. Some have talked about how high/expensive his contract is, but he’s been worth well above 2 WAR in the past three years, so if he “regresses” to a 2 WAR player, at 8.5M per WAR, he’s still worth more a lot more than his option next year.

The only way I see Wong not being a Cardinal in 2021, is if Edman shows he can keep it up at a high level (to play 2nd) and Carpenter rebounds in a big way, then Wong might be traded for a nice package.

To be fair, the extensions for aging vets don’t usually work out, but the extensions for the young guys have been much better. Wong himself got one and it’s been a great deal for the team.

I just looked for it because I thought there was a “Lineup” thread. I’d love to hear some ideas on how you ladies and gents see the lineup shaking out going into Game 1 on March 26th. This isn’t the lineup I would prefer, but I see it shaping up like below. I would love to switch in Edman for Fowler, because I think the lineup would be stronger with him at the top, but knowing what we know about how they use the big money guys, this is likely close to how it will end up.

    1) Fowler
    2) Wong
    3) Goldy
    4) Carp
    5) DeJong
    6) O’neill
    7) Yadi
    8) Thomas/Bader

The Cardinals control Wong through the end of 2021. He would then be 30, not exactly young by today’s baseball standards. They could then offer him the QO (which he might accept) or offer a 2-3 year extension. Either way that decision doesn’t have to be made now. I just don’t see the need to extend players before you have to.

Agreed. They have time to see how well he holds up before they do anything. If he has two more years like 2019 I’d imagine they’ll try to lock him up.

    Substitute Edman for Fowler.

Simba, not a bad idea, but are the pitchers actually worse at the plate than Bader? 🙁

GC, I’m not disagreeing with you, but there are 16,000,000 reasons why that unfortunately won’t happen. Perhaps in May that will happen.

Any one going up to Milwaukee the first weekend of May for the series there?

Elite D up the middle. Inconsistent but around league average bat. Plus arm and baserunner. Below market value contract. Two seasons of club control, THEN revisit a contract, not now off a career year.

    Fowler
    Wong
    Goldschmidt
    DeJong
    Carpenter
    Molina
    O’Neill
    Bader
    Pitcher

Any line-up that doesn’t have Edman in it is illegitimate.
