I felt like this deserved its own thread. KK has been sidelined following back stiffness during a bullpen session.

    Here’s a quote from Shildt:

“We don’t anticipate it being long, but clearly, we don’t know exactly what that timeframe looks like,” Shildt said of Mikolas. “So clearly that opened up a spot in the rotation to start the season, and possibly the same thing with KK. Can’t rule it out.”

So they didn’t bring in another experienced pitcher for depth and now you have Hudson, Mikolas, and KK hurt. You have Flaherty and then you are depending on a 40 year old Wainwright and an oft injured or headcase Martinez. Gant, which weakens the bullpen and the oft injured Reyes or a bunch of ?????? marks. I guess they have to be all in on what they’ve got now because the free agent market is about bone dry at this point.

I suppose this happens to a lot if other teams – I mainly just keep up with the Cardinals – but good grief it feels like we have THE most fragile pitching staff in the majors…..

Glass half full…. four less question marks…. Mikolas and Kim already down. And Ponce & Martinez will start.

This COULD work out well if CM can get it together and if PDL can show he’s ready for the rotation. Gant will be waiting in the wings. I have a feeling that the Cards will pick up some more insurance from somewhere. Mo doesn’t like being caught with his pants down. We’ve seen enough of him in his BVDs.

So the rotation to start the season could be Jack, Waino, CMart, Gant, and Ponce with Oviedo and Woodford waiting in the wings at Sauget. Not an ideal situation but we might be able to get away with it for a couple of weeks depending on how long Mikolas and Kim are out. I would feel more comfortable with a Porcello or Hamels signing.
